The top questions I've been asked about the bus is:

1. So, why did you buy it? Are you getting in a band and touring the country?
2. Why didn't you buy a regular RV like Bob's Winnabago?

Have you been asked these type of questions?

Leonard; Why? I am a NUT. Not touring,no band and I grew up with these and worked on sticks and staples and don't trust wood over steel and aluminum. I respect the work that goes into building coaches that we have and take pride in what I do. There is only so much you can do with a stick=n=staple job. I even had a Blue Bird schoolie and you could cut weld drill and what ever and most of the time not hurt much.

The question I get most often, by those lacking spirit, creativity and the ability to "think outside of the box" is:

"Hey man, so what's the deal with the bus?"

I feel if I even have to dignify that question with a response, they just don't have the ability to think outside of their comfortable paradigm, and they probably won't get it should the mood strike me to even try and explain it!

So I often tell people, "You just have to see it.."

Right on, guys!

The idea of purchasing an rv with a modified heavy duty truck frame covered in plywood was not the way to go for me. Safety, construction, durability, etc., the choice was easy.

I usually explain that before retiring from my job as a Paramedic/Firefighter on an emergency ambulance, I saw wrecked RVs and I saw wrecked buses. I will take a bus anyday over an RV.

I have to explain it, you wouldn't understand. Jack

After driving over 1.3 million miles on the road and seeing numerous motorhome accidents and the fact that they basically just fall apart in an accident (and this includes rear engine Diesels-they are built the same way), I only wanted a bus. Plus I know the mechanics of the bus since buses are not so different from big rigs. Good Luck, TomC

If the simple answer "cus I'm a busnut" too their "how are you today" type question still leaves them needing more, I refer them to this stupendous site for greater understanding.

~(when I ask myself "why a bus", I just reply to myself in a similar fashion as old chucky's fantastically wise & willful answer)

Mine usually is, "What kind of mileage do you get?", especially when they see my fuel pump pass 200 gallons

When someone ask me "what kind of mileage do you get?" I have 2 answers, first is "11 MPG, 6 on the highway & 5 in town, that adds up to 11". Second answer is "6.5 MPG". When they say "Wow, that is not very good mileage" I tell them "yeah, that is not very good mileage for a car, but not bad for a house. We do not have to eat our meals in restaurants or pay for a motel room every night and sleeping in our own bed every night is priceless". Jack

Can't imagine letting my tank get so far down...but then I don't have a 200 gallon tank. :-) ...mine is only 110 + what I carry "just in case". (6 gallons)

We'er of the same mind set as Jack...would much rather spend the $$$ on fuel to "see what we can see" than on Motels and Restaurants. Anyway, my bed is much better; as is the food, meal for meal.
Buy local, cook as we travel (as Lobster in Maine, Shrimp in the Gulf, Calamari on the left coast, etc, etc. Fresh...and we know how it is prepared. :-) :-)

Wouldn't trade the experience.

Our way.

I think that Jacks comment is spot on. I have endured with airplanes in the yard in various stages of restoration, A fleet of old green tractors, My street rod, very noisy motorcycles and anyone want to guess what the first question is when I take My 350 Chevy powered John Deere lawn tractor to a car show? The hell with growing up! John

The question that gets me is, "Why didn't you buy a regular RV like Bob's Winnabago?" I usually tell them I much prefer the bus idea. People don't just don't get it. Think I was trying to save money and walk away. 99% of teh time they just have no idea.

Have them drive both in a 30mph cross wind.
Then tell them that a 454 gas motorhome gets 7 mpg and this smooth, quiet, 14 ton elephant with HUGE storage and nearly unlimited towing capacity gets 6.5 mpg. They'll figure it out real fast.
My nephew used to draft us in his stick n staple everywhere we went huffing diesel smoke to get his mileage better. I wish I had 10 bucks for every spark plug, fan belt & tire he put on that thing.
AND buses are way cool.

heck, mine gets 12mpg and it's almost the size of the buses that I see on this board.

I drove through some dust devils that would have made my van go offroad and I didn't blink an eye.

Though I still can't make any of my RV friends see the "logic" in it. Too much work they say.

We were experiencing some severe storms last night and I had some company and I told them if they heard a train sound,RUN to the coach and get in and shut the door. They ask why and I said that is the safest place to be and if it was turned over it would not collapse like sticks and staples. After they thought about it they were confinced I was right and they may buy them one also and I told them which one do you want LOL That is why I like coaches even better that a House. My thoughts tho!

And the answer is......add the auto fuel, meals, motels, average mileage etc and...at the bottom line (at least in our case) is a resounding NO. Proven it over and over....over the years. :-)

Do it you way! :-) :-) (FF quote)

This months FMCA discussed the camper differences.

Some folks want to go CAMPING , and the camper lets them do it.

Some folks have a destination and going in a "camper" is easier and more pleasant than motels and greasy pit stop food.

In our bus camper , we go places , watching trees grow is not on our agenda.

In the boat its reversed , "as a day aboard is not deducted from ones life allotment" the location doesn't matter.

Why a Bus Camper? because its the most fun to drive!

Watch Dateline Investigates and it will change your mind about a motel real quick!! LOL

The wife used to work for a Best Western and she don't like motels either.

Ask them how often they wash the bed spread or shampoo the carpets that you walk across barefoot? What was the guy doing that handled the TV remote last?

Well, let's see.... what were the people doing in the bus before it was purchased...I hope you completely cleaned all the air ducts and bought a shell that never had a bathroom. Motels are disgusting, restaurants are disgusting, hospitals are disgusting... maybe I'll just stay home and try not think about what people did that lived in the house, condo, or apartment that I live in now. How about the money we handle or the carts we handle at the store...augggggh...I'm tired now; I want to lay down, but where??

I'm not a germaphobe by any means, but I do use alot of common sense and I'm very rarely sick because of it.

Both of my buses have been converted by me, so yes all duct work was removed, cleaned and new floor. Removed bathroom, but wore gloves and other PPE (didn't sleep in it or walk in it barefoot) LOL

I don't go to motels or hospitals. When I do dine out(very rare) I'm particular were I go. We would rather have a meal at home prepared our way with our utensils and our germs.

Generally after I handle money, shopping carts, or anything that dozens of other people handle I use a hand sanitizer or wash my hands.

"Do it your way" if you feel fine staying in disgusting motels, eating at disgusting restaurants, and going to disgusting hospitals. Thought that's why people got into this hobby, so you wouldn't have to, but what do I know. LOL
