Hey Folks I have to make a decision regarding my 4107. I have run another thread here ( drowning in buses refusing to let go) I have made my decision to part out the 4107 in order to resurrect my 4905-Phoenix (used to be Mcguyver's) the question is do I drive this to a salvage yard or continue to dismantle separating all the aluminum from steel and copper. does anyone have an idea what this labor may return? |

George - I don't get it. if you can drive it, why would you scrap it? Even more perplexing to my pea brain is "I have made my decision to part out the 4107 in order to resurrect my 4905-Phoenix..." If you need the parts to ressurect the 4905, same question: Why would you scrap it? I guess my question boils down to: Why would you scrap it? Or am I missing something obvious here? (It's been known to happen). Nellie Wilson |

Why don't you call the salvage yard and ask the comparative price for complete vehicles vs. the price for separate metals? Did you consider the time and effort to dismantle it? |

Sometimes, you have to scrap something when it costs more to keep it than you'll get out of it. If the local authorities are harassing you, the cost can get high. When scrapping it out, negotiate a price before you unload it at the scrapper. May be worth your while to drive some distance. The dirt bag that ripped me off got $0.20/ lb for old sheet alum, a coworker got $0.45 / lb the same day at a different recycler. Dirtbag got $0.60 /lb vs. coworker got $1.14 for a/c radiator copper. If you part it out, learn how they classify scrap & take in as large a quantity as you can to maximize the amount you get per pound. As for me, after time & materials, it is better to sell it whole than to part it out – that’d be different if I didn’t have to spend 9+ hours a day working for someone else. . . . Good Luck |

kyle is that a 34 foot excella in your photo? i had one that had been flipped on the way home from the dealer,i got it fairly straight but still needed all 3 front windows and all the cabinets put back in, ended up selling it at a $5000 loss to a guy in texas. |

Shame you live so far away, I would buy it for spare parts and park it in the woods, but unless they have moved it, Florida is a fur piece from Wisconsin. No one down in that country needs spare bus parts? Did you try advertising it? |

I dismantled a 30 foot Flxible city bus about 5 years ago and separated for scrap. I received $1300 for all the scrap, plus the V730, 30 pounds of brass fittings, spare oil fan torus, rear drums (same as 4104), air brake hoses, 12volt direct drive generator and regulator, electric coolant pump, steering drive shaft, 2 front wheel hubs (same as 4104), good rims, complete set of wheel studs for hub piloted wheels, light bulbs, switches, trans oil cooler, engine oil bypass filter unit, slack adjusters, dry air filter assembly, and many other small items that are usable. The scrap price was about 25% less than now. I used 3 refills of ox and acetl., 1/2 of a bbq propane tank to run weed burner to remove undercoating from alum side and roof metal.Didn't have a sawzall; used a hammer and chisel to remove necessary rivets. After practice, I could lop off rivet head with one whack. Took about a month of evenings and weekends, and I learned a lot of useful on how these units are constructed, and especially how rotted out under framing can be that are hidden from sight without very close inspection. This thing wasn't fit to be driven on the highways. I paid $1000 for the bus to get the v730 transmission. The engine, a V6-71, I took to my Engine buddies at Leid diesel to swap for future Detroit parts. Would I do it again? Yes; in fact I'm going to dismantle a 4905 this summer the same way. It was a sightseeing unit from Short Lines in New Jersey with all plexiglass roof panels.Tachograph lists only 300,000 miles. I was going to install an Automatic in it and convert it, but I instead bought an already converted unit.(age creep) BTW, a 4107 has a great deal more aluminum than a city Flxible, and many usable spare parts; some of which can be listed on classifieds or Ebay, Craigs. |

Wow many thanks for all the input. to Nellie when i said scrap i meant part out keep the useable bits and scrap the metals. if you read my other post you will understand my dilemma. (drowning in buses refusing to let go)I will salvage what can be salvaged for myself to use in the 4905 if I cant sell it. John thank you for the thorough narrative I will be a taker for the side glass up front the fixed ones not the sliders If I sell the 4107. I have it advertised on craigslists maybe someone will save her. if not she will be a donor so that others can continue their journeys.the picture in my profile is of my good friend Kevin (Mcguyver)I bought phoenix from him. |

A bit more detail In regard to Nellie's question. Nellie In a perfect world I would restore both buses. they both run sweet but the 4905 will take more work due to corrosion, plus the 4905 is bigger and you know how us guys have this preoccupation with si.. for ......well enough said |

She Looks Like A Solid Old Girl. Please Dont Part Out This Bus !!! Someday They Will All Be Gone. Believe Me I Understand How Life Can Throw Fast Balls But, You Will Be Rewarded Somewhere Along The Way If You Save The Buffalo. Maybe You Can Find A Bus Nut Out There That Can Save Her. I Just Bought A 4104 That Was On Her Way To The Crusher. What A Score For Me !! And Maybe Your Bus Will Be A Great Score For Another. Good Luck. JOHN MrBreeze |

George, it's your call, but if you have the choice between sliders and fixed windows, I'd take several sliders. You will probably want one on each side of the "living room" in the front and one in the bedroom. You may be thinking that you'll run the AC when you are stopped but from doing this for 11 years, I found that you will enjoy having them open going down the road and camping in nice temps and at night. You can leave the slider closed but you can't open the one piece as you travel. Also found that if your AC or genset fails, and you can't open the windows, you will be miserable. Just our findings. |

RE: kyle is that a 34 foot excella in your photo? It is a 32' unit - the longest they made with 2 axles. The 34' units are only 1 1/2' longer & have a third axle. I bought it as matter of convience - didn't want to miss out on time with the family while I was gathering parts & playing on the bus project. Also, I knew the history of this one - Mom & Dad took good care of the mechanicals, a little rough on the body tho . . . ;) |

Mcguyver is doing well we talk online often, he keeps sending pos energy towards the 4905 Phoenix. Thank you John I would love to be able to find a home for the 4107 and if it was up to me I would let her sleep here until I could take care of her as well but here in the Land of the free (as long as you stay in your box) that is not possible. I am being harassed by the township of Dania Beach they are making it their business to stick their noses inside of peoples privacy fenced 3/4 acre yards. Jim that is of course very good advice and I do prefer fresh air over a/c, is it possible to get all new rubber seals for these windows still? |

Hi George, Yes, I understand that Luke has all seals for the 4905 windows. He has most everything for GMs including door seals and baggage bay hinge. I resealed my 4104 door a couple of years ago. Made a huge difference in wind noise while driving and keeping the heat or cold in the correct place. |

RE: kyle is that a 34 foot excella in your photo? airstreams are great problem they are so un forgiving all you have to do is fart on it and you have $500 damage our busses are built tough!! but i will say the airstreams have no sticks and no staples.but are a pain to work on. |

well it seems that I may have a solution for both the buses, I found a couple that will provide storage @$100 a month and while in the lot the 4905 Phoenix will be soda blasted, rust cut out and welded, prep surface rusted areas and sealed, block out one window on each side with galvalume (trade name )sheet steel, and generally prepare for the paint work which can also be done there at my expense. I am trading the 4107 for this work on the 4905, I feel good about not scrapping the 4107 even if it means that I have to search out some items for Phoenix. Alex your bus has great style if I could I would trade you and restore it also. |
