Due primarily to the overwhelming cost of repair of my MC5 - and against all of the support and recommendations of everyone here, I have given up on it - and bought an MC9. (OK, so there were some other factors in my decision process other than cost) I'll be keeping some parts and then send the rest *cringe* to the scrapper. Apparently, none with whom I have spoken wants to hang onto it 'in-case' someone needs some MC5 parts. I have it at a repair shop now. If you're in need of some parts that wont diminish the value to the point where I'll have to pay to have the rest hauled away (right now I stand to get paid by the scrapper), then you may have them. I wont charge, but pulling and transporting the parts is up to you, or something you can work out with the shop where it is located. (I hope no-one considers this to be a classified ad as my intentions are to offer free parts to a busnut who needs them) |

Sorry to hear about this Paul, but i understand where you are coming from. Too bad there is no one local that could store it for a parts source for the rest of us. If you have the room maybe you could grab the bay doors and hang on to them? I could use a few small things for my 5. Contact info for the shop? Good luck with the 9. |

Hello Paul, I can relate to the downer scrapping an old friend could be, I have had the good fortune to find someone to save a 4107 I have, what does it need? repair wise. I can't locate your past thread if there is one. |

He needs a rear end and a drop box. There is an earlier post about it. |

Paul, Are you keeping the DD3 brake chambers? If not you should. I would be intrested but not sure it would be worth the trip. Tom Y |

Tom - My understanding is that this has a parking brake instead of a DD3. Even still, I figured that the cost to remove those parts would wash with the benefit of having the parts. Ed does bring up a good point: an angle I have not approached is to ask here - Is there someone who knows of a place to park this so that it can reach it's full potential of saving other 5's? |

Paul - I responded to your PM (email) earlier today. Hope you got it? I know of several (potential) places fairly close to your location. Please come back when you get the chance? Nellie Wilson |

Paul - Sorry to hear about your 5.. They are great coaches, but at least she may be able to bring renewed life to other 5s out there... Josh McElhiney |

Hi Paul - I must confess to having forgotten your original post. And as I love the MCI-5 series, I should have remembered, and been lobbying for someone to save the old gal (if I had some storage, it would be me). It's funny, but since becoming a bus nut, I really AM kind’a nutty. When I hear of a good old bus gong to the scrapper, it hurts almost as bad someone putting their pet down. But it hurts less if the pieces are used to save another old bus... kind of like a mechanized organ donor, you know? Part of that old bus lives on to fight another hill. Okay, my weepy, girly side aside, I’ll go re-read your post to save you answering questions you’ve already addressed. By coincidence, an MC-5A (1966) pulled in yesterday, parked directly next to me. It's a gorgeous bus... in some ways, I like it better than mine. If this rain ever stops, I'll get photos tomorrow (before I head for the Keys) and send you a couple. But long story short: I surely need bits and pieces, and would be grateful for anything you can spare. But, first, let's give your bus a little longer to live? I'm sure there are folks anxious to have it. They just don't know it yet. OTOH, if that fails, count me in for some parts. God knows my old Jessie could use a few. Nellie |

Paul, Maybe try to sell whole bus on Ebay? Do you have an idea of the scrap value? Put an ad on Ebay for a part ( maybe the bad dropbox), put a pic of the whole bus. List MCI, Bus, GMC, Eagle, Then put a # if they are intrested in the whole thing or any other part. Another idea? Tom Y |

Paul, Sorry to hear about your MC5, if you and I were on the same coast, I'd be over at your house looking to buy the whole thing or a lot of the parts from her. There are some parts I need, so is there a way to contact you by phone. THANKS Tom |

Hi Paul, It's been quite a while since I've been back to the board, and I just happened to get on and see your post. The short story with my buses is that I have a PD4501 in Alabama, and a 66' MC5a in Vermont. Mechanically our MC5a is pretty good, it's made the VT-AL trip twice now with only a handful of mishaps, but the body on the old girl has survived 15 years of soccer practice and attempted resoration by somebody with a grinder. All in all it's in rough shape. From your pictures yours looks like it has aged pretty well, but I know neither me or my bus co-owner would have any time in the future to spend trying to carefully get parts of yours in VA. So in short, are you trying to make a profit off the scrap of it or just trying to come away even? I don't have anything to spend on a third bus, various family memebers would kill me, but in talking with my friend in VT our first thought was low-boying it up there to slowly get parts off of once the weather is better. It'd be a fine solution if you're just wanting to get rid of it without costing you anything. Let me know what you think, also I don't even no if this is feasible yet, my co owner has to do a little poking around to see if he could even find a spot to store another bus. |

Hi Rob, Right now I am trying to sell it on eB_y to someone who will fix it and keep it going. If that doesn't happen, I figure that I'll get some of my money back out of it by pulling parts from it that I can re-use. After that, I'm not looking to make money or break even - I'm in too deep for that. I'd rather know that what's left is going to keep other buses alive. |

Well I hope for the bus it gets to find a new home with someone who wants to get it back on the road. It wouldn't be too bad if someone could find a real junker, something broken down with a bad engine that would be worth pulling the driving gears from. I'll try to keep an eye on the forum, so hopefully whatever happens it won't be a crusher, maybe just a boneyard. |
