I don't want this to sound like a classified add because it is not intended to. I just want to share some good fortune that I came across with anyone that it would help.
We bought our 102 and are converting it and in the process of converting it I have run across a few MCI related problems. I went to MCI tech support and got some help there but still had a few bug a boos so I went to the Grey hound repair garage here in Edmonton to see if I could pick someone's brain before getting arrested for trespassing.
Here is what happened.
The shop forman took a few minutes to show me how to solve my problem and gave me some great advice on other things that I needed to know about our coach.
Also he told me that they have some MC9s that they are going to scrap and suggested that I post an offer for some of these parts.
I don't know what exactly they have or what it would cost to get parts but two of the things that he said they want to get rid of caught my attention but as I can't use them I thought that someone out there would
First thing is a HT 740 allison transmission. They rebuilt it and never installed it in a bus
Second thing is a CAT 3176 B block engine also rebuilt and never installed.
The engine was the only thing that he could give me a price on and they want $10,000 for it.
I don't know much about Cat engines but am told that this would be a great price for that engine.
Please don't start calling Grey hound shop but if you want anything let me know and I will get the details for you.
This is not a commercial endeavor for me. You will be paying grey hound directly for anything you want
Hope this helps someone out there
I am posting this on other bus sites as well

Les,

There is a classifieds section on this web site that I'd like you to register and use. These parts are great, but don't belong at this location.

If you don't want to do it yourself, perhaps it might be possible for you to let the company involved know that this web site and the free classifieds exist.

I'll give you a couple of days to post them in the classifieds before I pull this thread. Obviously, since this is your first message on this board, you probably haven't had the opportunity to venture throughout the 100 pages of this web site.

I appreciate your input. Thank you.

So...on the topic of 3176 and 9s, does a 3176 fit in a 9 in place of the std 6v or 8v without modifications to the bus?

I am sorry if I broke some rules about posting this thread here.
I see others have posted threads about having parts for sale.
I am aware of the classified section but assumed that was for people who had things to sell. I only wanted to pass information.
Greyhound is going to send these coaches to the crusher and when they are gone they are gone. I don't know how often this sort of thing comes up but only saw it as an opportunity
to help others in the search for low cost or possibly free parts.
I guess I don't understand the difference
Please feel free to pull the thread if it is inappropriate and accept my apology

David
I know that greyhound did install some 3176's attached to a 7 speed stick in 102A3's.
I believe the install was done here in Edmonton by Finning.
Joe.

Les

Les,

No apology necessary. Glad you're aboard. No rules to break, just trying to point you in the right direction. Kinda like placing a "Death Notice" in the "Births" section, that's all. No harm done at all. There are many variations on a theme and I appreciate that you wanted to share with us all.

Joe... You made me look in the phone book to see how many numbers I had and actually I have 3 under my name but 1 is for a house that we use for students. If you want to get ahold of me the listed numbers are not of much use during the day but you are welcome to try me after 630pm till 930 pm.
If you get my voice mail leave me a message and I can get back to you.
I see you are here in Edmonton. Always happy to talk a little coach.

In answer to the question about the Cat engine going into a 9 the fellow told me that they had re-powered some of the 9s with 6 and 8V92s. I didn't ask what was behind the engine for a transmission but it must have been realistically doable or they wouldn't have done it.
I would see if you can find a cat dealer like finning and ask.

On my way home yesterday, made a slight detour into the Hound yard in Edmonton and got introduced to the shop foreman. I had some of the items in the above post correct. The install of the 3176 engines and transmissions was done by Finning in Calgary.
In the yard were no mc9's but a half dozen 102A3 all equiped with 3176 and 7spd slated for disposal and all having had parts robbed from them. There was one complete C3 which is up for sale with the Cat engine.
Dave the clearance between the top of the valve cover and the "bench" wasn't a half inch.
I asked how that set up had worked out, and they seem to be quite pleased. Most of those hauled a cargo trailer for most of their lives with no ill effect.

Joe.
