Hello Everyone:

Wondering how fast your coach will go and what speed you normally run at going down the interstate? Thanks in advance. Henry of CJ (86 & 60)

I can run 80 flat out against the governor but only when passing other buses. Usually I set the cruise control at 70. If I am in a hurry I go 75. If I pull my trailer I go 65.

I run 55mph. I take all day to get to 55mph (the egg thing). On grades I let it run down to the low end of the tourque rpm's, stay in the slow lane but not the shoulder! When I get to the crest of a hill, there I am, no big deal.

Funny how I never over heat? Tires last twice as long? Trans fluid is bright RED? Diff magnet is clean and oil is light? No heat cracks in brake drums? How can this be....? Yep... 55 miles per hour. Went 57 mph one time couldn't pee for a week!

Did you notice not a word about MPG?

got a 4106, cruise usualy 70 to 75 , this is about wide open,it does a good job, i dont know the rpm because i have no tack.but i dont beleive it hurts a thing. the govener is set to go 78 with a allison 730, it does good , cant tell much difference in the fuel milege no mater what im doing or how fast i go its about 7.5, down from 10 i got with the spicer, a price i had to pay not to shift gears.

My skoolie will run 74 no sweat (as verified by my friend, whose 318-powered W-200 had trouble keeping up on hills), with plenty of power left in 5th gear, and holds 65-70 up hills easily. On long trips, I usually hold a large vehicle (truck, bus, RV, pickup & trailer) to 60 when towing, or 65-70 if I'm not. My mileage is.....a mystery. I haven't taklen any trips yet with the new 460 engine.

Running 55 on the highway around here is not just unsafe.....it borders on suicidal. Heck--I had a salt spreader truck (spreading salt) sail past me at 60+ today.

In our 4905 with 8v71 and Allison V/730 Automatic we usually run about 70, sometimes I run flat out at 78 mph. When I am towing the Thing I keep it down a little, maybe 5 mph or so slower.

I don't know how fast I can go. I know how fast I've gone (90 mph, using a stop watch and the mile markers on the highway). I was startled to calculate that I was going that fast!

That was turning 1900-2000 rpm in 10th gear. My engine is a 8V92TA and I think the redline is 2150 or 2200, so I ran out of nerve before the engine ran out of grunt!

I have since found out that my bus has a "double overdrive" on the 10-speed road ranger. Makes it kinda' "long-legged."

I usually cruise at 70 to 75. My bus seems to have a sweet spot of 1600-1700 rpm in 10th. That equals a calculated speed of 75 MPH--I had to calculate my speed because my tires were low-profile 11X24.5s.

As an aside, I got new tires this weekend--fullsized--because my old ones were OLD!, and I wanted the two additional inches of clearance. Since I now have bigger tires, I'm told I'm able to go faster. Not that I will! Ninty is already too fast for me, even with new tires.

IF you wish to figure out how fast you should be going at different RPM's , and what will happen if you change something , like rear ratio , or tire diameter check:

http://home1.gte.net/res07rfl/

For folks with no tachometer its easy to graph the speeds for every gear & then install "pips" on the face of the speedometer to let you see the ranges for lugging or easy downshifting.

Works for me!

I think the more important question here should how fast can you stop?

OK so have you ever noticed that the vehicles at the body shop all have front end damage! Where are all the bent rear ends? Kinda makes one wonder?

Karl, how true! Making a bus stop better would be a good thing to do before worrying about top cruising speed. When was the last time you heard someone say "Hey, I just reduced my breaking distance from 60 MPH by a whole 10 feet!".

JMHO, it doesn't matter if your talking about buses or hot rods, the price of going fast depends on the size of your pocket book and the willingness to separate yourself from what’s inside!

Cheers

By and large, the junkyards. That damage generally totals a unit-body car.

Ours does 83 mph by GPS, we don't have any tach, but I think that we bump the governor at 2100 RPM and 83 seems to be about 2175 RPM.

We run 65 or 70 and average 9 mpg for all driving, running 27,000 lbs. We have gotten 10.25 running I-5 at 65 mph on the level and our lows in mountains and other slow or fast running has never went below 8 mpg.

We've got a standard shift and have no plans to change it. Third gear tops out at 57 mph, which is just about perfect for pulling most grades that we have any reason to run, and the Jake makes 6% grades easy.

As far as I know, our setup is stock, with the possible exception that the governor is set higher than they did in 1964.

With an antique TDH 5106 transit bus that I have since sold, the top speed was about 65 with the two-speed automatic. The previous owner used it as a charter bus and had installed a 4103 rear-end. Tried an experiment going south on the New Jersey Turnpike. Couldn't open the entrance doors because of the vacuum caused by the speed.

Now have a 1962 SDM 5301 suburban that I would love to restore. Top speed on this with four-speed spicer and 6V71 is 62 mph

How much did it cost?
Well, lets see....First start with a $6500 BEAT shell with no motor, trans and bad dropbox/rear assembly,to that add SEVEN years of work modifing and converting at home while holding down a 45+ hour a week job plus wiring 50+ custom homes on weekends, vacations and evenings to help pay for this obsession. Being happy with four hours a night sleep. Spending countless hours on research trying to find the BEST way to approach different problems and make it a unique creation of my own, one that will work and be fun to show.
Sure, it costs money, almost every one here has thrown more money than they want to admit into their bus, only they can determine if its worth it. You do the math.

Here's the math:

Ability plus passion divided by sacrifice equals fulfilment.

To everyone else we're just nuts-- bus-nuts.

I hope I get to see your bus!
