Hi everyone! Just starting to work on my Eagle after four-year nap. First order of work: the alternator. I have a 01, with the original belt driven generator and the original pulley on the pillow block. I will be installing a Delco 50 DN oil cooled unit. First headache is the pulleys. The pulley on the 50DN is a triple groove, outside diameter of 3 3/8”, 1 ½” wide, and the inside (bottom of grooves) at about 2 3/8”. Where can I get the correct pulley to match what I have on the alternator and mount right up to the pillow block shaft? Or should I be looking at changing the one on the 50 DN? I know ratios are important, but I do not know what should be there to work. HELP! Vern PS. After I get this resolved, I’ll need to know belt #’s to make it work. Then I’ll post the connections question last |

Vern, I think you need 4000 alternator rpm for the alternator to put out 250+ amps at idle (see curve) then calculate what size pulley you need on the alternator if the you know what size pulley is on the motor. 6500 rpm continuous is max on the 50DN so choose a pulley that fits in that range. As a ratio, approximately 3 to one as far as pulley diameters. |

If it fits, the easiest would be to swap the pulleys on the alternators and leave the rest alone. If it fits... story of our lives! happy coaching! buswarrior |

Ummm, If sized for 4000 alternator RPM at 500 engine idle RPM, then 2100 engine RPM would spin the alternator about 17,000. Thats only about 10,000 over the max RPM??? Have you considered/do you have room to use one of the 5 auxiliary drives on the back of the engine? No belts, and much easier to connect the cooling oil. G |

George, 6500 rpm is MAX for the 50DN alternator that's why I wrote "CHOOSE" a pulley that fits in the range of 4000 to 6500 alternator RPM. I placed a link so you can see the curve. If you decide to use direct drive you still have to CHOOSE the gear ratio to give you 250+ amps. The gears on the alternators come in different sizes too. |

Jd, Your first post specifically says "...you need 4000 alternator rpm for the alternator to put out 250+ amps at idle..." This is why I posted what I did, I'm not into being a grinch, or the troll under the bridge, I just don't want to see the alternator over-speeded. A 1:3 ratio will produce 6300 alternator RPM at 2100 engine RPM, which IMNSHO is just right, and will still produce over 100 amps of 12V at idle. G |

Delco makes an air cooled, non-oiled alternator that puts out 270amps that is much smaller then the 50DN. If starting from scratch, consider this alternator instead-it is a new design. Good Luck, TomC |
