I am trying to help a friend solve a battery maintence issue on a set of lead acid batteries. (maintaining water level). The set is very hard to look in to from the top. 8-8D stacked 4 on top of 4 and tucked in deep. He just bought these and he is not interested in moving things either. Isin't there caps available that will help him? Thanks in advance. | ||

Another option is a small mirror; mechanic's inspection mirrors have a telescoping handle on some versions. | ||

Was cost the reason in going with flooded instead of AGM? For his situation AGMs would have been a much better choice. There are caps available online to minimize electrolyte loss. | ||

Hydro Caps solve the problems of fast heavy charging and have been used on boats with really huge recharge equipment for a long time. The hassle is they stand 2-3 or so inches tall. If they will fit , they work. FF | ||

I cut down a plastic gravy baster .Inset into cell and pump until you find acid level. Mark baster with felt pen. Use baster to fill also. | ||

...real strong sliding battery shelves, commonly found on school buses in junk yards. He may need to custom make some for that kind of weight from garage door track found at your local hardward superstore. Corrsion is a concern if it is the wrong material. | ||

forget them ...too dang expensive, need removed when equalizing or very short life. They MIGHT last as long as the batteries. Spend that money on sliding racks instead. | ||

Hydro caps need to be removed when equalizing, water misers don't. I have had mine for 6 years in May and they look just like they did the day i put them on. | ||

Ed how often are you using your bus how often did you used to have to water the batteries and how much did that change with those caps? Thank you again. | ||

maybe they could use the caps on the ones that are hard to reach. That would also give him a way to see if they were worth the cost for without trying a full set on all the batts. | ||

Joe, we have just started our 7th year of fulltiming, so the answer is,..... all of the time! ;>) Water usage depends somewhat on age of batteries, how much we were using them, climate, and time of year. Sometimes i had to fill monthly, other times i could go longer. Now i have one year old batteries and i check them on the first of the month. Sometimes i have to add a little water and sometimes i don't have to add any. I kind of abused my old batteries, (discharged them more than i should have) but now i keep a much closer eye on them. how much we were using them THE KEY , deeply discharged batts will require more water than sets that mostly float. FF | ||

I agree with Fred, i think that that is the biggest factor in the amount of water used. Everything else will add to it somewhat but only to a lesser degree. Since i don't run my batteries down as far as before, my water usage has been much less. I think that the caps may cut down on water loss by 25% or so, maybe more, but i have no real way to measure it. Supposedly they help to the tune of 70-80% if i remember the product info right. Take that with a grain of salt. They do keep my battery tops much cleaner though, and i have less corrosion on the cables too. |
