I did it again, but this time, I did it with about 25 witnesses. I was driving the New Look at work & stopped for a pickup at the parking lot that is the start & end of my loop. I was about 10 minutes early, so I decided to stretch my legs, hit the men's room, and do a walk-around. I did so, checked all my tires, discovered a burned-out marker light (and noted it on my inspection report), bought a newspaper from a machine, and got back in. I flipped the switch to shut the door, checked the inside of the bus for lost stuff (somebody had left their glasses on one of our buses, which turned out to be the other guy's), and went to get back in the driver's seat to read the newspaper. I sat down....and the engine quit. What the heck? I hit the starter button--nothing, not even a click. What's up, doc? I also noticed my 2-way was dead, all my lights were off, and my 4-ways didn't work. Uh-oh, this can't be good. I waited for the other bus to show up (the boss was driving, training a new guy), & explained what had happened. He tried starting it (no go), and was about to call road service when a voice came from nowhere as the 2-way suddenly turned on, causing him to jump & drop his pen under the seat. What the heck?! I looked down for the pen, & saw it next to a round, black plastic thing on the floor, just under the front edge of the seat, about 4" in diameter & 2" high with a dial of some sort on it, bolted to the floor. Upon closer examination, there was writing on it: in red, it clearly said "EMERGENCY STOP--PUSH TO ACTIVATE". Oops--I must've kicked it as I was sitting down. Talk about a stupid place for a kill switch........ The bus is at the shop--it will be gone (or at least moved) tomorrow. Well, at least dealing with 4--year-old equipment is never boring...... |

Johnny, Curious: Several times you mentioned driving the old New Look around. And that you also drive trucks. (tow trucks?) What is the nature of your biz that involves trucks and old busses and passengers? Scott |

Simple: 2 jobs. One driving a bus, one driving a wrecker. Full time (sorta) & part-time, respectively. I prefer towing. |
