We had a flat tire last night at the gig....

Bad News:
1. I just cleaned out the bus and forgot to reload the 1" impact and aux tank
2. Lug nuts were too tight to loosen with standard tools
3. No additional "cheater bar" on the bus
4. It was midnight and no open shops close by

Good news:
1. It happened on a side street going very slow
2. It was the outside passenger rear
3. We had a spare
4. We were 12 miles from our bass player’s family auto parts store

After the gig we loaded the gear and very slowly drove the bus to the parts store 12 miles away. We found some pipe and used it on the lug wrench to loosen the nuts. I drove the bus inside rear tire up onto a wood block to raise the outer tire off the ground. Changed the tire and we were off on our way home a little more tired and a little behind our regular schedule.

Austin,
I have a 1 inch impact gun that I have not hooked up yet. Could you describe how your system is put together? Tank size, hose size, do you fill it from the bus, etc.? Thanks!

Glen you should read the thread about lug nuts just a bit below this one. there are several options there for emergency equipment one that will do the job for $180. without the complexity of an air system. I am not knocking it, I will set up my coach with tools and air power so that I can do an in the cradle overhaul and weld anything if necessary. being in the trade my friends will never let it go if I break down helpless on the road.

I use a 8inx40in used air tank it has a 150psi pressure relief, waterdrain, the inlet is standard shop air with a check valve (so when disconnected the air does not rush out), the out is 1/2in. hose(quick disconnects on all hoses an tank, impact). Air is supplied from the bus.

Ralph are you powering a 1 in. impact in that fashon?

If so what is your pressure regulator set at.

I assume you can only do that engine running high idle and even then you have to wait for air to build back up between lugs???

Even if this is all the case still very good

Save the fuss,$$$,nerves and the back!

Invest in a road service and let them do the work....works for me for many years now, no disappointments! +- $100 a year...includes owned autos, too!!!!!! Best deal around.

FWIW :-)

I do the same as Ralph only I was too frugal (cheap) to use quick connects in 1/2" (big $$ round here) so my punk tank is hard connected to my 1" impact with a 1/2" line and I use the usual 3/8 quicks to power up my punk tank either from my comp or from the bus air. And yes some short blasts to loosen the lugs, then I usually switch back to my 1/2' impact. On another note recently bought a 3/4" SK which I have high hopes for, maybe I can retire (sell) my 1" monster air hog. Most of these impacts still run at max air 120 psi though I have seen some info on 250 psi guns but they were huge $$$$.

Oh yeah and to Zimtok ...Ain't that the way it goes?
Only time I had a bus fire was when my fire extinguisher was sitting in my van instead of my bus....and my van has it's own extinguisher so really no reason for the bus bottle to be awol...good thing sound blankets (moving pads) smother just a little faster than they burn.
Since then always have 2 extinguishers on the bus.

Road service is fine until you are 100-200 miles from anybody that can help you, or you are in an area with no cell service. i have it but i can also do it myself if need be....out here in the west it can be a long ways to anywhere if you are running on the blue roads.

Full stocked fridge...patience and the cruise of the HW Patrol or local Sheriff will solve most of those problems. If I "worried" about what "might happen"....well,... I probably would not go anywhere. Just my way (Proverbs 3:5).

Do it UR way....:-) :-)

Both opinions are totally acceptable.

I will continue doing most of my own stuff unti old age catches up and then I suspect I will be doing less.

I haul EVERY tool I own, plumb. framing, everything!! I have emptied my garage into my bus and toad (PU/w cap)

It was a win win I decided that was the best spot to put them all to keep from having to build multiple sets and I always have everything with me!!

Incurable.

Full fridge is also a +

My set-up is similar to what Ralph has.

Auxiliary tank that is fed with the standard 3/8" hose with standard 1/4" quick disconnects. I can connect it to the bus or home or any standard shop air supply.

1/2" hose from the tank to the 1" impact with larger quick disconnect to accommodate the larger air lines and flow needed.

There is nothing wrong with having/using a road service, but I am very much a "do it yourself" person. I hate waiting/paying for a road service when I know I can do it myself. I would use a road service only as a last resort.
When I found that I didn't have my impact on the bus and the lug nuts were not coming loose we did call the only local 24hr road service to see what it would cost to come out and get the lug nuts off. They wanted almost $200 just to loosen the lug nuts. And he said it would be almost 2hrs wait till he could get there.

Just curious Austin, have You ever tried to use your setup. it takes a lot of air to run a 1 inch impact. Bus air canot keep up even if you charge the tanks. A 3/4 inch impact gun still takes a lot of air. I use a knocker wrench to bust it loose and then 3/4 impact and that is with my shop air. My 3/4 CP impact with the big volume compressor barely gets them to proper torque.

I have a similar system to Austin`s and it works....but...the air supply cannot keep up. so you loosen a 1/4 turn with the 1" on as many as you can, go do something else while the shop air/whatever catches up, and start using a 1/2`" as soon as you can. Not the fastest system in the world but I have changed tires with it and pretty sure AUstin has as well.
