Hello all...

My name is Shawn, and I used to have a 29' Neoplan with the 8.2L fuel pincher. I had planned on converting that over to a RV, but the engine was shot and Neoplan having gone under, I decided to part ways with the little bus.

I now have a 35' GMC/Blitz RTS bus I know this one will be around and probably serve me a little better than the Neoplan. Easier to get parts for that's for sure...

My question is this...for whatever reason, and I understand this is very unusual, but blitz put in a reliabuilt 6v71...

What can I do to add a little bit more power? I live in Florida, so Its really not like I'm dealing with mountains, but a trip back to PA may happen someday. I cant really afford to replace the engine with a 6v92, so I need to work with what I have...

Also, would a change to "highway gears" do anything?

Thanks for the input, I really appreciate it

Shawn

The multipication of highway gears would reduce the hill climbing ability.

If you feel underpowered , it will be worse with highway gears.

Why would you feel underpowered , no bus camper will accelerate (100 lbs to 1 hp) very well .

NEW 4.10 highway gears (76 MPH) are about $2500 -

Very Very hard (impossible) top find them used anymore

Plus another $1000 to have the gear set into your pumpkin and re-installed back into your bus.

It will improve your MPG - but you WILL have to shift to 2nd or even 1st for big hills

Welcome to the insanity!

Run your coach the way it is for awhile and see how it works?

The worst that will happen is you climb hills like an old truck. Flashers on when you are 20% slower than the rest of the rat race, right most lane, and enjoy the view.

Almost all of us climb something at less speed than the traffic, so even after a re-power... this ain't your father's Oldsmobile.

Figure out which differential gear you have now, to feel better about the package, and for future planning. I'll echo the concern for putting too tall a gear into it. Like riding a bicycle up a hill in too high a gear...can't pull.

And at some point, whether you have 2 valve heads or 4 valve heads.

Consider this: you are running at good efficiency. You are using pretty much all the power you have, none left over to waste on acceleration and loafing.

Also, a left turning 8V71 swap will be another easy alternative.

happy coaching!

Check out Nimco in New Jersey; they have take out left hand 6v-92's out of RTS buses that they dismantle.

Don't even goof with that 6V-71. I realize that you just said you can't afford to change to a 6V-92TA, but that is the only real way you're going to get sufficient performance out of it. There are a whole bunch of these buses around with 6V-92TA and V730 Allison that you could easily swap out-since the engine/transmission are on an engine cradle-just swap the whole assembly. Good Luck, TomC
