I'm looking at another option to a motorcycle trailer. Has anyone used either one of these two hitch mounted carriers? Please specific which on used. What are your thoughts? Thanks. http://www.discountramps.com/heavy-duty-motorcycle-carrier.htm http://www.discountramps.com/rv-motorcycle-carrier.htm (Message edited by tizer4 on February 21, 2010) |

I saw one close up, where I store my bus a guy with a class A rv has one. He carries a full size harley on it. I always wondered how that might throw the weight balance off on a class A, though I can't imagine it would make any difference on a bus. It certainly looks a lot more steady than the one that sits on a class V hitch with bungee cords tied to it to make it stable (which I have seen on the freeway a few times) |

If the bike isnt heavy , mounting it in the front allows looking at the engine , with out dumping the bike. Have carried a BMW R 60 US up front , but at 400 lbs its 1/2 to 1/3 the weight of a hog. Now carry a Honda Scrambler , 1/2 the weight of the BMW. THe headlamps simply shine thru the spooked wheels. FF |

Fred, a friend of mine has one that I think he wants to sell. It is like the one on the back of the moterhome. In fact I know two people that have them one is electric with cable and the other is hydraulic. |

I would be nervous riding a bike with "spooked wheels" |

I helped a friend last fall. I moved his bus from Prevo Nashville over to his ownership lot on N.C Here is what he is toating around. It is the only photo I have and I do not recall who made it but I can find out for you. We drove it a few hundred miles. There is another HD up there it hauls 2. We put a car dolly on it and hauled our acura and dolly along with the 2 bikes. He had never pulled a toad along with the bikes like we did he was curious as well. He had me take a real good look at the welds while prevo had it up on the lift. EVERYTHING LOOKED PERFECT. It is a bunch of weight there 2 HD and at least 7 or 8 hundred lbs of iron. Went down the road just like any other. The carrage the bikes were on had a slight side wiggle that could be fixed with a hitch stiffner.IMO Other than that I give it a thumbs up. On a side note the scoot was a 40somethig pan with a suiside shift. he told me to take it for a spin if I wanted. The other one was for his girl friend it was a Billy Lane creation. Very cool fun trip I digress. Let me know I will phone him for info if you like. |

This creation by a fellow I know is helping me overcome the doubt I used to have regarding bike lifts!!! I do not know if he fashoned a hitch extension to hook something else but although I'm sure he could the whole idea was to eliminate pulling anything. Homemade very cool done correctly. Tied into the frame above the doors giving it 4 mounts, it's not all just riding on the engine cradle. Smart Car-Wheels Up Whether or not this type (bike lifts too) of thing will bring on any long term bad results, the jury is still out time will tell.

Here is a better photo of the bike lift. They are higher than the smart car.The wheel rails sit up around your shoulder when up high enough to hook a toad or car dolly underneeth. It is all mounted up to 2 additional recievers one on either side and the exzisting hitch only carries whtever else you hook on if you so choose. It was electric easy to opporate and you had to lower the carrige but not remove the bikes to get the rear doors open. What else? That is all I remember. I do not know how heavy a smart car is but it probably ain't much more than 2 HD. IMO the smartcar riding low, mounted 4 places is easier on its bus than the 2 HD's are with only 2 mounting points on that one. |

The lift itself wouldn't cause me any concern - those loads & materials are easily known. It is the structure (possible hidden damage?) of the old bus that is called into question. Due to the fact that you are adding a significant load with a sizeable moment arm to the rear of the coach (which wasn't designed with that in mind), I'd add a close visual inspection routine every time you stopped for the day. Looking for cracks in the bus structure, headless rivets, buckled or displaced skin, etc. Will probably be all right, but you wouldn't want it to unload your cargo unexpectedly. ;) Usually better to know than guess . . . |

Agreeded. Definatly a factor. I would not want to even begin to imagine the stress and loads on everything pourposing down a rough road carrying a load like this. |

Hey Joe_ camper I have a smart car that we wanted to pull 4 down but due to the slap shift transmission this is not possible. I would very much like to talk to the fellow who hung the smart off the back of the coach. Any way to get in touch? If possible I will leave my e-mail Les |

If it's a Prevost factory hitch - No problem - Constructed for more than 20k lb. loads - FWIW On the bike hitch carrier - I have one but it is custom built from steel, much beefier - can slide additional hitch in the reciever for additional bike or toad - sorry no picture (it's in the back of the garage) - HTH |

Yes we can Les. The builder took advantage of the added strength that is built in to the the frame on a prevost in order to secure it to the back of the coach. I do not know who much mod it would take on a bus without that structure but I know it would be extensive. Let me know my e-mail address in our profile is incorrect and I can't figure out the fix. I will see and e-mail you if yours is current |
