A 4104 fan is mouted on the crankshaft through a vibration damper type hub. If the rubber in the hub fails, like mine did, the fan goes through the radiator screwing up my day. Does any know of a devise that can be mounted on the crank to keep the fan in place if the rubber fails? Bob |

Hi, Bob Since you are having to replace the rubber it should last a long time so there is no need for a safety grill. Your misfortune serves as a warning to others to check their fans periodically and make sure they aren't coming loose from a warn out hub... --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Geoff: You caught my attention! my fan has about 1/2" of play at the tip of the blade, is that loose? 4905 w/ 8v71 Peter |

Don't you have a fluid drive fan on your 4905? If so doesn't the fan bolt to a metal hub? The play would be internal, but I don't know what the allowable free play is. --Geoff |

Geoff: Yes, the fan bolts directly to a metal hub. It is a fixed mount; I can use the fan blade to turn the engine. That must mean there is either no fluid drive or it is frozen. What does a fluid drive hub look like? To be honest, I never had a real close look at the mount; I assumed it was supposed to be rigid and a little play would be OK (yes I know the bit about AssUMed). I also assume that the little bit of free play is due to a loose key in the hub to crankshaft interface. My logic and justification on being lazy and not finding out if there is a problem was based on assuming that if the key sheared that the worst that could happen would be a freewheeling fan. I guess it is time for me to check the book and look real careful and see what the deal is… thanks, Peter |

There is two types for the 4905. One is a fluid drive which should have oil lines connected to it and a large line off one of the radiator lines near the bulkhead area. The second is a direct drive which has no lines and is drive off the oil pump area. The fluid type is larger than the direct drive. I had very little play in either type. If you need to know more ask Luke at U.S Coach. I think he lives with da book and what he doesn't know you won't need to know. Mike |

I had no luck finding a new hub i had to put in a used one sure would like to find a new one. Any body know where in might get one. One guy said they run around $700.00 A new radiator dosn't cost that much so might as well wait for the fan to go through the radiatoer again. |
