What size gas tank do you recommend for an Onan 5000 commercial model generator? Thanks

Depends upon what you want and what you need. In our application, we are figuring (guessing?) with operating the APU for 10-12 hours every third or forth day. Diesel electric coach...

...and having a boondocking capability (dry camping)of a minimum of 30 days or one month. Sooooo about one half gallon per hour at load for about 10-12 hours (to recharge batts) divided by 3 or 4....

....times 30 days equals the APU tankage or usage requirements. Your needs or desires may differ depending upon what you want the coach to do for you.

Since the only way we will be able to cool the coach in summer while parked and while running down the highway will be to use the APU, this obviously will make the tank bigger.

Might be surprised to find out later that the tank for the gen set is way too small. Energy demands in a coach have a way of filling all the available capacity. Murphy's Law I guess. Good luck.

In my Grumman I have 25 gal. for a 7kw Kohler. I fill it twice a yr at most and usually only once a yr., about 15 gals. each time. But, only have 172 hrs. on genset in 6 yrs. In my Neoplan I will have 175 gals. of diesel, tapped for the 7kw gen set, so I guess I can use the genset more now. Beware of parking next to me!!!! (although I'm installing a roof stack for the genset). Figure abt. 1/2 gal/hr at 3/4 load and go from there.

I have 25 gallons of propane for an Onan 6.3 Kw (also runs the stove). Seperate BBQ-sized tanks fuel the heaters and hot water heater. I'd prefer to have at least 50gal for the genny - but then propane doesn't pack as much umph as gas does.

YMMV,
Scott
