Today as i was sorting some stuff out in the new storage unit that we got in Yuma, i got to talking to a couple of guys that were unloading stuff,( diesel parts), into a unit 2 doors down. The guy with the unit is moving from San Diego and is a 2 stroke mechanic. Work mostly in the marine field and was not aware that there are still a lot of buses that have 2 stoke engines. Told him about several bus sites so hopefully he will show up on a few and introduce himself. :>)

are mechanics that understand the 2 stroke principle that rare to cause such excitement? I look at my 8v71 like a giant weed whacker engine. these thing are beyond simple. very BIG, but simple

Well George-that comment just tells me you've never really dived into an 8V-71. Just some examples-you need a special tool and training to adjust the fuel injectors for correct running; if you have a Jake brake, you need to know the correct sequence of events to adjust the valves properly; if you take the blower off, you need to know what to look for if it is worn-and if it is, the knowledge of how to set the end play so not to self destruct; if overhauling the engine, you need to know how to fit the dry cylinder liners to get proper cooling; if you replace the cylinder liners, you need the right tool and knowledge on how to install the pistons into the liners (many an engine has had an early demise [at less than 100,000 miles] because of this fact). And George-these are just a few of the nuances needed from years of experience to work on the 2 stroker engines. On the other hand, 4 stroke engines are a snap. Good Luck, TomC

Tom, You are correct and to the point that the DD 2 strokes require special. exact procedures to maintain a long productive life.

George may have looked at the engine "from a far" as it is a large pump air in thru blower, no intake valves, pistons, out the exh valves. Just add fuel & air you have power, heat, and noise.....

Kinda like looking at the Grand Canyon as saying it looks like a big ditch. True but much more to it upon closer observation.

Take care,

Gary

Don, yes i got his name and number. He is going to be somewhere in Yuma. I know that right now he is really busy so i don't want to bother him. I think he will be on the boards after he gets settled in and let everyone know where he is at. May not be till later this summer though.

I meant no offence here truly, and I do realise that there are going to be particulars to this beast hence my comment that I will find all the technical manuals that I can find so as to understand those aforementioned nuances. I perhaps made the comment from being used to the easy snap to repair 4 cycle twin cam with variable valve timing, variable length intake runners dependent on countless data inputs from countless sensors. twin engine management ECUs twin turbos conversion on some that require remapping the ECUs Lamborghini V 12 that I am working with on a regular basis. or the 20s era phantom V12 from Rolls Royce, on through the Arnage model 2004 when I finally had to leave Rolls Royce & Bentley after they sold their soul to the devil. so again I do not mean any disrespect I will endeavour to learn as much as I can and with all the help I find here my learning curve will be short and my mishaps God willing will be few. regarding the big ditch, I have seen many great man made things, Mayan Pyramids. the Sistine Chapel and other great works of art, But I would NEVER call the grand canyon a big ditch. I believe that is GODS art, to me it was very impressive and humbling. so please guys consider me as an untrained but fairly well skilled member that will gratefully absorb any advice. and maybe one day on one of those Rallies, convoys or whatever bus events. this newbie may be of service if something goes wrong with a fellow members weed whacker :-)

Gotta say I am with george on this one. While it seems that it is common enough to have ham fisted mechanics destroy a DD 2 stroke, I see no reason that a skilled mechanic with the proper resources should not be able to tune/repair a dd 2 stroke. Sure they're different than most of the other stuff on the road (probably why so many have been destroyed by poor work) but I am quite capable of destroying any engine if I tune ass backward. FWIW after I have tuned and destroyed my 6-71 ya'll can tell me "we told you so".
I feel kind of strongly about this 'cause real DD mechanics are getting long in the tooth and we need a new generation of people who can at least kind of tune/run the rack of a 2 stroke. We also need to pick the brains of any experienced DD mechanic we can find, + if someone could find a clip of a great DD mechanic, running the rack with an accompanying narrative, you can have my old bus seat.

I agree there are far fewer people willing to work on a 2 stroke. I called around several places before I located someone who could run the rack. That said if you are looking for the younger two stroke guys look for the ones coming out of the military. The govt still has a ton of 2 stroke detroits

Thank you Patrick. If there is one thing that I cannot abide is ham fistednes. It took me the better part of 3 years 20+ so called experts that I would not see fit to change tires, to find a Craftsman to work with me. I am trying to find all that I can regarding the care, tune, overhaul, procedures for the DD any advice or direction will be greatly appreciated. and down the road after I have been seasoned a bit I would gladly help any member here, Tom your absolutely right I have yet to even change a fuel filter on my very first bus which is under the knife at the moment and will not be ready for me to explore it's mechanicals for at least a year. but I have no doubt whatsoever that if I have the info, specs, procedures and tools (which happen to be my other hobby) I can and will be able do what ever my 4905 may need including an in the cradle rebuild although it would be nice to add a fork lift to my assortment of tools so that I could remove the cradle for a proper job. Tom I would really enjoy it if you where near me in South Florida I would love to take apart a DD with you. you sound like your very much in tune with these beasties.

George,
I too meant no offence here truly, My comment regarding the GC was to provide hyperbole of over simplification, Not a shot at you.
BTW, I just found a Navy trained DD 2 Stroke mech, he worked with me for nearly 12 years and one day our conversation rambled to RV's, the bus, and the 6V92. He has worked on all types, and being shipboard, he knew how to get 'em home.

For another day would be your location in FtL, We have a family home off the New River, south of Wilton Manors.
Take Care,

Gary

Dear friend Gary I was not in the least offended. If I was it would speak very badly of my character since one would have to be an egomaniac to be offended by what I considered to be friendly banter. and guess what, we are practically neighbours. I live in Dania Beach and would really enjoy meeting you and digging deep into your DD tech Buddy's brain one day.

George -

Welcome to the madness!

I've heard the 2-stroke DD called a lot of things in my time on this planet, but never a giant weed whacker!

I actually got a big chuckle out of that one!!

Thanks for sharing, and welcome.

FWIW & HTH. . .

hey george if you want some fun read the "dutch" thread on the MAK board from a few years ago. Man that guy had a hard time until he bailed. I like to imagine him speaking with a thick dutch accent as the series of calamities (minor) befall him.

My mistake, the good dutch stories are on this board. But george the Mak board is a good one, they have huge threads occasionally as well "a la air door". Start a thread stating you know that 80/90 hypoid gear oil is better than Delo 100 40W for a 2 stroke and watch the results...

George,

The link that Dale provided 3 posts up is correct. They no longer refer to it as the "MAK" board since the change in ownership. The letters "MAK" are the initials of the previous owner.

It's now Bus Conversions, which is also the title of the magazine they publish.

YUP I went via Greyhound (fitting) with one of my baby marmosets. I drove the 4905 Phoenix from Louisiana to florid in it's toasted condition. He now has one of my monkeys so we are family. odd currency don't you think?
