Busnuts I need an opinion. I have noticed for the last few hundred miles a rythmic squeak or rubbing soud coming from somewhere in the passenger front wheel area. I thought maybe I had a shoe dragging or maybe a bearing getting flakey but when I jack it up the wheel spins freely with no noise. Could this be a sign that a bearing is getting worn but doesn't make noise without the weight on the wheel??? Curious as to your experiences as this is the first heavy piece of equipment I have had to troubleshoot.

You could have a wheel bearing getting dry, or starting to go bad. Pull wheel, check bearings and adjustment and also check brake lining and shoe return springs. Of course it may be just about anything else too.

You spun the wheel but did you also grab it and try to wiggle it?

Yes. No movement or any drag that I could detect. I have also tried to pay attention when going around right of left hand turns to see if there is any noticable difference when the wheel is loaded or unloaded more than on level ground. I guess I need to finda good source for bearing cap seals for a timken axle so I can R&R it

Suspension looks good and all zirk fittings have been recently serviced. Shocks may be a possibilit though I hadn't thought of

Doesn't your Flx have torsalastic suspension?

If so you may be hearing your torsion bars flexing.

Mark,

Yes it does have torsalastic suspension but the rythm seems to change with speed which is why I am suspecting something to do with bearings or shoes. I was really surprised to not hear some telltale sound when I jacked it up. Oh well I guess I need to pick up one of those torque converts we were talking about in another thread so I can remove that wheel without shop air.

Don't assume that anything new is perfect. Lots of defective new stuff in the world. Try moving the tire to another position. That will tell you whether it's the tire and rime or something else.

Your right Jim could very well be the tire itself.

Mark hasn't been heard from much because Mark is a stay-at-home dad with a 19-month.

Currently, anything bus related tends to not get done unless it is a dire emergency. And then the little one tags along to supervise.

I suppose some more troubleshooting is required.

When you say a rythmic squeak or rubbing sound, at what road speed does it occur? Does it occur every time that speed is achieved? Does it ever go away? If it does go away, what conditions cause it to go away? Does it get louder or is it always the same sound level? If it does get louder, what conditions cause it to be louder?

I am still inclined to think the suspension but a cracked wheel or tire going bad could still be the culprit.

Good luck on the troubleshooting.

Well I hope it is a loose lug nut but several years ago we had that and it was a wheel bearing on the curb side. It started as a steady squeak that got louder after about 200-300 miles. Repair wasent too difficult but i did have to get the bearing ordered at the local bearing place in Ocala Fla. Parts with shipping were around 85.00 in 02. Good luck
