Terry -

The reading lamps are energized when the exterior clearance lamps are switched on. This also turns on the destination sign lights, the blue aisle lights found under several rows of seats, and the night light in the lavatory (if equipped).

Third switch back from the front of the panel to the driver's left, between the headlight and driver's light switches.

All of the various switches and their functions are found in the MC-8 Operator's Manual, along with a lot of other driver-related operating details. Start shopping eBay and other places for your copy, some of which are now available on CD.

Thanks RJ i appriciate it... i ahve been looking for the manuals, but thus far all i can find is 1 copy on ebay, which is $30 (reasonable) until i add in the $90 shipping the guy wants... i am waiting for the manuals to be available on CD (or even better via download) on their site and then I'll likely order them.

Also is it normal for the clearance lamps to be on any time the bus is running? with mine, they are, and that clearance lamp and ID switch doesn't seem to do anything (although the ID lights were previously blocked by a TV, and therefore probably never changed and all burnt out.)

Terry -

When the FMVSS went into effect back around 1974/1975 or so, there were some changes made to all vehicles.

On the commercial side (which your bus was considered), one of these changes was that the clearance/ID lights have to be on anytime the headlights are on.

However, when the headlights are off, the clearance/ID lights can be switched on/off independently.

If your clearance/ID lights come on with the master switch, either somebody's changed the wiring or the coach was possibly ordered from the factory that way (which would be very unusual).

If you're talking about eBay item #170438967984, why don't you send him an email asking if he'd send it to you via the Post Office's "media mail", as opposed to UPS Ground?

yeah, i thought it was strange that the markers come on with the master power, but it doesn, i may have to investigate a bit... i know there were some changes in the electrical panel, as there are a few ring adapters sitting there doing nothing, i assume these lights are one of them...

Thanks for the info, glad to know it's not an obvious oversight on my part.

On our Sportscar we simply replaced the std reading lights with the swiveling units from campers.

Can be aimed (stock is fixed) and lights a counter top , stove , sink,,,,very well.

THe other set of lights that was so the pax could walk about at night was kept , so at might one switch illuminates the coach at low level from end to end.

Using or modifying what already exists does work, no need for the Sledge.

Thanks all for the info, i figured it out, i pulled off the switch panel and there was a few wires just hanging there, after checking the manual i found these to be the wires for the reading lamps, as well i found that they'd bypassed the switch for the running and ID lamps so they were "always on" so i moved that wire back to the other pole on the switch too, so now everything operates as it should.

The manuals are available at http://www.coachinfo.com/Manuals/Coach/MCI/MCI8.html If you were just looking at the Operator's manual for $30.00, they are all but useless. You need the maintenance and Parts manuals, around $100 apiece.

The manuals are more important to you than fuel!
