By "rod" do you mean the heating element? Just a guess, but maybe the anode that is placed in water heaters to prevent electrolysis? Or maybe the cold water inlet tube to puts the cold wter in to bottom of the tank? Make sure the heating element does not contact any other metal objects in the tank, it will quicky ruin the element. What type and brand heater is it? Jack

Tom; since you have it already drained,pull the element out and look inside for debri so you can flush it out and then you can look at the element too. Elememts don't cost that much so check er out.

and how do you get the element out of a propane heater? the tube i speak of is the anode tube that hits a "wall" as i try to install it, the "wall" can be lifted but it dose not seem right.

Tom I thought I had posted another message like;
In view of the facts of not knowing it was propane,I therefore resind the thought of pulling the element out and inspecting the unit. The propane units have a wall in them so the water will be heated in the bottom first. Now the "wall" should be welded in place and it appears it may have come loose. The anode rod should not touch anything inside so it may be able to do the job it was intended for. Good Luck!!

It's common for water heaters to be bilingual!

Maybe it has an electric element in it to give you a choice and the electric element has rusted out and is loose in the tank.

Tom I would call the company and have the model and serial number and ask them what is in the tank and if they say nothing again,ask them what it is?? Some tanks like Larry mentioned are electric/gas.

went to fill the system with water today but forgot to tighten the plug on the water heater......in my infinite wisdom i decided to take the plug back out to be sure the rod was seated properly....not a good idea i got soaked from head to toe.... i think the heater should be fine... never did figure what that piece of whatever was. i am thinking it might of been ice?
