I have a 8v71 engine I would like to know what year approximately, along with any features that are special. (It is a sidewinder from a 80's something GMC bus.)
1. It has a serial number stamped on the right side; 8VA 297110(star).
2.The model number stamped below it has a metal tag over it. The metal tag has a number 044001375.
3. The blower has a metal tag with number 0440052915.
4. The color is a cream color, on valve covers looks like under the cream it had the standard green.
5. The valve covers are cast alum.
6. The oil pan on the left side has a looks to be breather bolted to it which appears to be original equipment.
7. It is a 4 valve.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I should have said removed from 80's GMC bus, not to throw anyone off as to what the engine should be.

If you can help or have any idea as where to go,I would greatly appreciate it.

I was told when I purchased it that it was a recent overhaul, I requested records but never received them. I removed the valve cover and it all looks new. Injectors I had that on a note and am not able to find my note I believe # 75 something I know that is not much help, I will have to look again if that info is required?
I had paid 1,900 + 650 shipping for it and trans Vs28. If I can get some info I will try to sale it since I no longer need it. It is complete

Please No what I should have done feedback, my wife takes care of that, haha.

As I said If you can help or have any idea as where to go,I would greatly appreciate it.

That engine was first built in 1974 according to the serial number. Does it have large oval air box covers or thin narrow ones? And yes, you must provide the injector number to figure out what you have, although we can't be sure if the timing was changed...

Geoff,
I have not been out to the shop or found my notes. Wife thinks the injector # was like - 715C GM? The air box, you are speaking of is it the air box on the bus its-self? If so I would not have any Idea since I did not see it. The Blower has the normal round inlet. Bus was a 1982.

Did the metal tag number 044001375 have any meaning to you such as whom might have rebuilt it and why it is cream color or just rebuilders color?

I sure would like to know who rebuilder was. Otherwise I will take it down to check it out, trying to ward that one off.

Thanks again,
Larry

Okay, if you have the small air box covers then you at least have the newer block. You may have injectors like 71C5's, if they are bigger than that you may have advanced timing (you really need to go look again). The rebuilder doesn't mean as much as it's current condition-- the way to check out your engine would be to drop the pan and inspect the bearing and crankshaft, and to start it on a stand and check it's operation and compression. To do more you would have to inspect the blower and pull the heads.

Geoff,

Gotcha, thanks that as you can see was the direction I was heading.

I well look again and add it here.

I have heard others speak of cream color (they might have called it something else). So I thought this might have meant something?

I have been working with diesels for years (I know hard to believe) but new things come along which I have little actual hands on knowledge about. Overhauls etc no problem, but always the two heads thing. Your posts are normally very good and appreciated.

Thanks again,

Larry

Larry, it sounds as though you might have a engine that was a replacement instaled rather then an out of frame rebuild for the same unit.

The "cream" color may be a surplus military engine, did it come from near a military base? Is the tranny and engine both cream color? The metal tag numbers sound like they are part numbers, run them by a few truck dealers parts department and see what comes up.

Don't ya just love it when you don't get the paperwork!

Cream or an off White was also used on many

GREY Marine factory engines.
