Anyone know anything about Honest Bob at H. B. Industries in El Cajon, Ca (San Diego)? http://www.hbindustries.ws/ About a year ago he quoted me $875.00 for a reconditioned Jake kit, and $575 to install including reworking the tailgate to clear the taller valve cover. It is time to get some jakes on our 4905; we are planning a trip up into the high country of Arizona next month. Any other references in the San Diego area would be appreciated… Peter |

Bob is alright to work with and stands behind what he sales as long as you keep your issue in his line of sight. He seems to have alot going on and can let things slip sometimes. That's my impression. John |

I can't help with info about him, but I think you should spend your money on more diesel fuel,(to see more territory) or perhaps a better grade of wine for dinner. I've had my '72 4905/8V71/4spd Spicer all over the highlands of AZ, and NV, and UT and other high places, and have NEVER had the need for a Jake brake. I just came through Kingman last week, off I-40 onto AZ 68 and down into Bullhead City,(nasty piece of road) then back up though Searchlight and into Las Vegas. I'm way behind some folks mileage wise, but with 20K miles of Rockies, and Appalachian Mts. I've learned not to worry. You need to be cautious, 'cuz it's like anything else, if you get careless or stupid you're gonna' get hurt. Life's a Trip... enjoy the ride! Cheers...JJ |

Peter, if you are in no great hurry wait till you are in the Williams Ca. area and talk to Ted at coach maintanance, best time is after 6 pm as that is when he starts his day but well worth waiting for as he has forgot more about GM products than most of us have seen. he is located at the south off ramp at williams, you can see all the buses in his yard from I5going northget his phone # from Skip at 206 767 0123 as they work together Ted is very GOOD on DD motors. mel 4104 |

Peter, If you are located anywhere near Roseburg, OR, you might also check with Dave Gregory @ Southern Oregon Diesel. 541-672-7400. S.O.G. has been doing my maint./repair work for a few years. They do good work, prices are in line and they have treated me very well. Dave is a busnut and understands buses and busnuts. But, IMHO: My Prevost Champion, S41 (35'er) w/DD8V71, has an Allison MT644 tranny - the torque conv locks in 2nd gear - and no Jakes. We've done many of the long grades around the US including AZ68 through Bullhead City, mentioned above, pulling our 3100 LB toad w/no supplement braking on the toad. Never had the brakes overheat. The key is keeping your speed down. Lower speed = less brake heat buildup. In my opinion, Jakes are nice but not a necessity. Relying on them can get you into trouble. Watching rigs barrel past me, relying on the Jake gives me the shudders. If the Jake fails they'll be in trouble. Just keep the binders in adjustment. Good luck. |
