I have converted my eagle to a 8v92t and I can't get full throttle with the old linkage. Someone said I needed an air throttle which can be had with cruse contrle. Who makes these and how hard are they to install? |

It's not a matter of how hard they are to install, it's a matter of how hard they are to drive! No feel, and s-l-o-w response. Good Luck! Cheers...JJ |

JJ: Where do u get the notion that they have no feel and cause slow response? Certainly, the feel is different since u don't have to stand on it to move '35 feet of linkage. As to slow, I have it on both of my buses. Both get off the line rather well, and especially the Jetliner w/8v92 DDEC. Fred may want to consider a cable, Morse comes to mind, proby cost $125-$150. Available at Marine Parts places if no where else. |

My 06's cable housing was so corroded I decided to put in an air throttle. I didn't drive the bus much with the cable pedal so I can't say I can compare the actual operation much. But after about 6k miles of driving, (even with a manual transmission) response and feel don't seem to be a problem. Lack of response may be too small an air line from front to rear. I can confirm the rear linkage is gets to the full throttle position long before the engine can accererate to it. I got my kit through Luke at US coach -- sent me everything I needed. |

Fred some people will tell you to fix the old cable one, but if they are so great how come there none on the new buses and no rig being converted to them. it is a real step backwards to have manual after you have had troudle with the old linkage as it is far easier to change to a air throttle then than fool around with all the grease and messevery time it gives you trouble . have had mine im my 4104 for 10 years now and it is quick and responsive as it was the day it was installed. at least 6 other fellows up in my area have now changed to air. parts are easy to get your local truck parts store have all the parts in stock or can have them in the next day for you , just the foot treddle with valve 3/8 air line and slave cylinder and air fittings nice and clean and no grease to muk ....just my way mel 4104 |

Mel What does it cost in parts to go to airon a 4104?and what parts do I need / do you have part #s? Thanks John |

Don't gorget a module for the automatic transmission, if you have one. |

For most folks pulling the "messy" cable is a once in a lifetime task. Takes a couple of hours to take everything apart , pull the old cable & flood the cable housing with diesel or PB Blaster. The gunk & crud will disolve overnight , and an air blast will clear the diesel , leaving the housing soaked & rust proof for another few decades. Synthetic grease as used in wheel bearings is fine , but I use Tefflon that is still great lube down to -50 (or so the tube sez). A one time fix ( most cables havent been touched in 40 or 50 years) , since the coach was sold new. If your a "belt & suspenders " guy like me install a BRAND NEW cable , and keep the useable old one as spair.(Std boat practice). To hoke up a fine system with a dead feeling & much slower operating air thingy is fine IF you have a slushpump coach and don't enjoy Driving!the coach . NOT My Way,to add complexity for no purpose, A bit of grease , to be repeated in 2050 IS My WAY! Works for me, FAST FRED |

John, i have 6 gm transits in the back field to get parts and i used them as did some of the other fellows to change over so do not have part # but go to a truck wrecking yard or a place that is scraping transit buses and they will have every thing that you need. as to the 2 hr. fix of the cable ,try fixing a cable system that the outer core has a hole in or frayed inner core that sticks and breaks off when trying to remove and see where you are at 2 hrs. later. other than standing there looking at it and saying a few not nice words. even if you put in a new cable you still have the +40 year old casing to fight with, how ever some people like spending their time that way which is ok for them but not for me. and as to feel it is as good a feel when you have used it as the cable type, and yes the 4104 is not a slush pump type of shell and you can enjoy driving it as much as any coach out there, manual stick and all just no cable throtle cable, enjoy which ever way you go . mel 4104 |

If the inner core is removed & serviced while it still moves, it won't break & stick! By the way, mine had a hole worn in the outer casing. IF it happens it will happen in the part at the engine end where it makes two 90 degree bends. But, the guys who designed the 4104 made the outer casing in 3 foot sections, joined by flare unions so that a damaged part can be replaced without pulling the whole casing! (BTW, the flare unions are a larger inside diameter for the cable to pass thru so don't lose them!) The 4104 was made to be as simple & reliable as possible. Everything is rebuildable in the field. Why take out something that has been proven to last 2-3 MILLION miles & replace it with a complex mechanism that needs to be overhauled periodically with soft parts? You are adding a cylinder & a treadle valve that can be the source of pesky air leaks. The cable won't leak! Jim-Bob |

I. didn't give you enough info; My bus is and 196501 eagle which I have installed an 8V92 c turbo and 740 allison aotomatic transmition. My throttle linkage is a bunch of leavers which turn the motion of the accelerator to twisting a about 5/8" shaft the length of the bus then with leavers ets returns the motion back to ft to back motion which activates the leaver on the engin. No cables. And I can't get the slack out of the linkage. I did try moving the pivit point on the lever on the govener but my foot gets tired. From the comments I have gotten ( all of which I am very grateful for. THANK YOU ) I guess I need all new which ever. How dose the automatic shift, and my desire for cruse control affect my final choice? Thanks Fred B Batie fbatie@ezy.net |

The dead feel of a air throttle makes no problems for a slush pump. You just "stab & steer" like in a Buick. KING makes Cruise Controlls that will work with most anything. FAST FRED |

Hi, in answer to FF on his hatered of air throttles, go to your local bus yard and tell the driveds that they are going to change all the buses to cable and see what the drivers tell you or maybe go to a work yard of heavy equipment and see what they say, and up here in our area even the boats in the booming grounds use air,or ask the long haul truck drivers what they think but do not tellthey are driving a slush pump and that they do not drive their trucks but that they just "stab and steer" it could be very hazards to your health and cause major dental problems, not to mention the damage to you vehicle..as FF says air is not for everyone it is for alot of us. mel 4104 |

Fred-- since your linkage is worn out, you have an automatic transmission, and you want cruise control, then the air throttle is the way to go. Air throttles work great with an auto, and you can install a Rostra cruise control unit for under $200 that attaches to the foot throttle pedal. That is the setup I have in my RTS and it works great. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

I installed an air throttle on my 8V92 due to many problems with the linkage set up, and it has worked great for past 9 yrs. There is no response delay and the "feel" is fine tbird |
