I have been putting off installing a fuel guage for the fuel tank but a friend said I needed to get one, so I have this question. Since I will be installing an aftermarket unit, if there are any pre-cut holes for the GM unit, this probably won't fit. Did GM make a port for the fuel guage in the tank?? So where does one cut a hole to install a guage float? I was thinking dead middle of the tank so that the rocking of the fuel wont cause too much of a fluctuation. Do the GMC 125 gal fuel tanks have baffels inside that I have to cut away from? If so, anyone have an idea where the baffels are so I can miss them? Thanks for the input(output) Quest |

Quest I installed a fuel gauge in my RTS 125 gal tank using the universal fuel tank sender from JC Whitney. The top of the tank has a standard sized access plate that allows the sending unit to be installed easily. The baffles are not in the way, so it works fine. Be sure to use a ground wire from the sender to the bus frame providing a good ground. good luck |

I had to cut a hole for the sender in my 125 gal RTS tank. There are baffels but there is plenty of room to put one in the center section of the tank. While you have the tank out, you should add an extra tap for a possible diesel generator-- there is a good spot close to the engine pick-up fitting on a blank "boss" of the aluminum plate (you'll see what I mean). Also, if you have your tank out it would be a good time to relocate it in the air tank bay so you can use the second bay for storage. Write me if you need details and pictures. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Also, with the tank dropped, it couldn't hurt to have it boiled out (radiator shops can do this) & coated so it won't rust. I had the "new" (used) tank for my schoolie boiled out & coated--well worth the $190. |

Has anyone used the above mention MicroPluse level sensor and what are your results? It could be a good thing if it works as advertise. Michael j |

Hey Phil Smith I have the JCWhitney full tank float and I have the 125gal fuel tank. Where did you find that standard sized access plate? I glanced at my tank and it does not seem to have that. Of course that day, I did'nt bring my glasses either. Where abouts is this access plate, might be a good place to place the fuel float. Thanks - cd |

Hi Cory My tank has several of the little round plates(approx 2.5" dia) screwed into the top of the tank and the JC Whit sender was a match. I put the sender in the location nearest the passenger side. Seems to be pretty accurate so far. Phil |

I don't think Phil has the stock RTS fuel tank (if I remember correctly from a couple of years ago when we discussed it). A lot of transit agencies replaced the stock tanks with bigger ones. |

I have to take a look again, I remember where the fill and whistle acces is attached and where the fuel return access is, but I dont recall addititional access. Of course my tank needs to be cleaned off from dirt and such also. That was what stopped me from installing the guage, too much other stuff to do. - if I remember right, it looks like the tank in the manual, I'll have to dig up the manual again, dont recall access plates there either. Thanks guys, it was a shot. cd |
