My first RV experience was in my grandparents travel trailer in 1950. I stll remember that trip from Illinois to Florida. We camped at Marathon in the Florida keys and fished from the old 7 mile bridge. | ||

Pop rented a Shasta 16-8 ft. trailer & drug it behind the '59 Plymouth Wagon all the way to Mt. Rushmore from Wisconsin, we had a good time. 3 months after we got back Dad drove a '51 Studebaker '48 passenger school bus down the driveway & commenced to turning it into what he called a "Camper", big enough for the 5 of us. It took him about 3 months to finish his conversion. It worked out so well one of his jealous & unskilled truck driver buddies bought it & Dad promptly went out and bought a '51 Flxible w/ the Buick Straight 8. The disease has clearly been passed down, my brother has owned 2 Flx's whilst I have puttered away with my 4106. My biggest fear is that the secret will get out and the hoards of Ignoratti will converge on the lifestyle and ruin it for for the rest of us. My first 8 years of over the road truck driving-I had a normal sleeper berth and spent many nights in motels. In 1988 I got my truck with a custom 8ft box behind the cabover that had shower, toilet, refer, microwave, sink, hot water, etc. From 1988 till 2000 I lived in the truck about 3/4 of the year and put 750,000 miles on that way. Does that count for living in a vehicle like an RV? Good Luck, TomC | ||

Up until 1988 I would say you were CRAMPING after that I'd call your accommodations envious, I am reminded of those words spoken by Maj. Frank Burns, "....they'd kill for the chance to sub-divide a packing crate!". I wonder how far who would go to sub-divide an 8ft. Sleeper? | ||

I was doing cross country furniture moving in which driving is only about 50% of your work-hence the relatively low mileage per year rates. Most truckers running single will do 120-150,000 miles per year. Good Luck, TomC | ||

A "Bed Bugger" eh? That can be a back breaker. Maneuvering a 300" wb & a 53x102 in residential areas can prove, uhm...interesting? Why does that type of hauling give me visions of Richard Pyor freaking out & Dana Carvey trashing a Saab? LOL | ||

Actually, mine was a 235" wheelbase (set forward with only 36 degree cut, not quite like the trucks now with 50 degree cut) and a 48ft'r. Was always a challenge to get the rig into a condo complex and even more of a challenge to get back out again. Good Luck, TomC |
