I have a list of items that I need to acquire for my bus 4905 / Mcguyvers which he named phoenix, it fits. I have found a couple of parts buses but my challenge comes when the owners ask me to make then an offer for my list. I am at a loss, I have a very good sense of what are fair prices for for cars that I service but clueless regarding buses. here is my list, any advice would be of help and very appreciated. even Sean's If he chooses to honour me with a complete compiled history of negotiations from all terrestrial and extraterrestrial {which I suspect he may be from} cultures past and present. I promise not to go away in a hissy fit if he does. OK sorry I regress. here is my wish list.... the smaller bay doors by the rear wheels, the door and drivers glass with the toll sliders, the D shaped glass both large and small, the front end plastic trim with the reflectors by the wipers GMC logo. the wiper motors and arms, both headlight bezels. the original style rear engine bay door. the turn signals switch mechanism. all the marker lights, ...What would be a fair package offer for all. |

George, If I were you , I would not replace the driver's slide & the entry door glass with originals. I would buy Peninsular windows with slide openings. Those let you open the windows while travelling, they have screens and the half opening on the driver's window lets you put your head right out the window if you want to when listening to the engine or backing up. (Don't knock these attributes if you haven't tried them!) I have them in my 4104 and at night or on many days we can ride with them open and no AC (Not Florida Summer days though!) |

We replaced the claustrophobic '06 solid glass with Toll Hole, with a Penn and were very dissatisfied. There is little air movement underway as the window is in a dead area, if anything the air vents out not in. Keep those J traps full! After a bunch of looking, about 5 sets of 4104 windows gave a L and R set that was fixable. Would never go back ,,with the rear section winged out there is silent ventilation, with the front section open the Breeze is delightful although at 70mph it is far from silent. Eventually I will remove an antenna mounted on a mirror arm which makes a lot of noise, and redoo the seals to fix on the coach frame instead of the opening portion of the window , which should quiet things down at speed. GM design is great , designed for your coach and does what a window is supposed to do, ventilate. FF |

I have the penn's on my '04, at the driver's seat and the door. Mine are nice and quiet, even at "speed" (if you can call flat out in an '04 "speed"). To me it doesn't matter if the air flow is in or out, as we do keep a couple of the seating sliders cracked too. The full traps is a great suggestion, FF. BTW: I take the screens out of the Penn windows when on the road. That does cut down on the wind noise for sure... |

Thanks guys for the options, Fred I would like to use 2 of the original style sliding passenger windows like on your bus after I remove all the steel sections and use aluminium to structure and clad the sides. the original window frames survived the fire/Cajun blacking, (I did get the bus in Louisianan) I do not know which would be more cost affective have the glass made, locate original seals to restore these frames or???? I will contact Penn and ask if they could make a window in this style. but as for my negotiating dilemma would you guys venture a guess what should I throw out there as an offer for all those aforementioned items. I just need a reasonable range I do not want to be insulting to the owners but I also do not want to kick myself for overpaying either. Grateful for the help |

FWIW... and I am not sure this is appropriate....I have a number of "sliders" that came out of a Crown...roughly 28"+- high and +- 69" long (parallelogram). I have "saved" them hoping that some one would want to use them. A couple have "broken panes"....would guess 5-6 in total. Not sure exact numbers. I rebuilt most (not the ones described above) with new felt, etc etc.... even cut a number down to fit what we wanted. If interested, contact me via private email.I have Pics and can give exact dimensions. RCB |

George As with most used items they are worth what ever you are willing to pay for them. If a seller is not willing to give you a price on what they have to sell then when you make an offer they can not be offended. Offer what you are willing to pay. if they accept then it is a good deal for both of you. If not they may counter offer and you can choose to accept or decline. Remember it is not necessarily a competition to see who wins in the price game. It is one person with something to sell to someone else. Go to the guy and offer him what you are comfortable to pay and see what he says. or low ball it at $250 and wait for him to counter offer. Good luck. I hope you get the parts you need! Les |

George, As Les said, if the seller won't set a price, make him an offer you are comfortable with. I would try to keep it "friendly" by saying something like "Would you take $$$ for the parts?" This leaves it open for him to make a counter-offer if he is not happy with your offer and hopefully will not offend him. Jack |

Well now I know without a doubt. I had my suspicions that bus people are a cut above but Now it has been proven to me and I am ashamed that I felt the need to arm myself with expert knowledge in order to enter negotiations for my parts. WELL guess what Guys, this SUPER nice ex GM guy that worked on the line asked me if $100.00 would be OK by me. I will counter offer with $250. I really like it here. Thanks guys for the help and link to penn windows. and THANKS IAN!!! |

Hi George I am so glad that you have your parts and it sure seems the guy is much more than reasonable on the price. The hardest part of any negotiation is knowing where to start. Sometimes drives me crazy when someone says "make me an offer" especially when I am in unfamiliar territory. I bet the fellow, who turned out to be a great guy, also had no idea where to start. You are also a great guy upping the asking price to what you thought was fair I personally think you got a terrific deal at either price. Les |

Jorge... I'm not sure if the old window frames from Phoenix are still laying around at the house or not... I haven't been by there in months now... I'll head out and see if they're still there in the next few days and let you know... No idea what it would cost to ship them though... they're pretty heavy, even without the glass (which, as you know, is gone courtesy of the Fire Dept who refused to let me move it before it went up in flames)... -Mac |

Hey Buddy, I do have the frames it was the last things loaded before I made the dash back home. I am debating the cost of shipping in order to get some already restored from RC Bishop he has them at a very reasonable price in case someone else needs them. |

Ahh, ok. I didn't know ya snagged 'em. Glad ya did though... Just keep in mind they'll need modification to go back in. Since I had no intention of putting the frames with windows back in, and was going to just use standard RV windows... I simply cut the hinges. I tried to get the screws out, but it was impossible and I was running out of time when I did it. So... either new hinges will need to be welded on, or some other means of reattaching them will have to be thought of. Lemme know if I can do anything for ya man... I got to know that bus pretty well before everything went to hell (literally). -Mac |

Ahh your losing it man. you told me they were in the corner by the trash and you told me to make sure not to cut myself with the broken glass, and you also told me about the modifications (ahum) you made to them...silly bugger. Now for the everything going to hell comment. I take issue with that, there is no such place. your critters finished the physical experience they were in and moved on to the next plane in their evolution. so did the bus. and now your going to embark on your next experience while in the meat suit you currently occupy. All good and part of the ride. when are you going to send me a recent picture of Cricket. |

Well, unfortunately, none of the maintenance things had been done to her before she burned... But, she did have fresh engine and trans oil... But don't assume anything... The only NEW part I put on her was the air governor because the one that was on it actually cracked on the trip home. One thing I *KNOW* needs doing is the street side rear DD3 chamber needs a complete overhaul... It not only leaks, but sticks open (as you know)... Don't assume the work-around for it will continue working... You saw how much difficulty I had getting it to unstick the first time we tried to move her... I had replaced some of the wiring in the driver's console, but again... it'll all have to be redone. MAKE SURE when you do this, you run a NEW positive feed to the rear breaker panel... the existing one (also mentioned before ya came to get her) broke somewhere between the front and rear... Aside from that, you have all the manuals on disc... Contained on there is the complete maintenance checklist... Plan on doing all of it... I'd also restore the breaker panels back to factory schematics, just for clarity... Those diagrams are in the manuals I gave you as well. When I got the bus from Wayne, he stated that it was kept up with maintenance while it was being used, but... There's really no telling. I had planned to just start going through everything, honestly... Oh... When you start rebuilding the interior... *MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE* you *DO NOT* cover the inside rear engine access hatch!!! It's an ABSOLUTE necessity on that bus! Plan for it. Make it easy to get to... I had to rip apart the entire back end to get to it on the way back from Florida mid-trip because she just died... turned out to be that front/rear battery feed had broken somewhere... Look at the rear panel.. Remember the red wire bundle I showed you running from the Alternator to the breaker panel? That's how I solved the problem while under-way... I just didn't get the chance to fix it properly... And be VERY CAREFUL when going after the alternator... The nuts that hold those wires together require proper torque and that they're CLEAN and UNDAMAGED.... Those washers/nuts actually seal the post (which will turn freely once the nuts are disengaged)... From what I could tell, that post also serves as the "Fill" hole to fill the alt with oil to prime it (I think it has an internal oil pump... someone more knowledgeable than I can answer that one for certain)... Of course, change your filters. Another piece that I had trouble with while under way (also mentioned) was the central heating unit... it leaks and leaks fast... Overnight, I lost half my coolant and got a coolant warning the next morning from it... I closed the valves leading to the unit (which also effectively killed defrost)... You can also gut out the original factory air pieces and put a small generator in that bay too I think... There's quite a bit of space behind that mesh door once that's all removed (I had planned to put a very small generator in there as an emergency backup unit for charging the batteries or just an aux gen for running minimal electrical needs compared to that big generator)... That's all I can really think of offhand... We discussed all of this previously, but... Figured since you asked, I'd write it down. And you're lucky I didn't have another set of rims and tires to throw on her before ya came and got her... I liked my Alcoa's... ;) ^.^ As always, if you want to know something... You have my email and my phone #... Call if something comes up... I'd be happy to help if I can! Hopefully, we'll see each other again for Jack's customary New Year's party. No idea if I can make it, but hey... Anything can happen at this point, right? I'm hoping to have my donor bus pretty soon and have the engine/tranny problem in my bus resolved in the next month or so. I found one that I think will work (posted in my other thread)... Take it easy my friend... And you can call just to BS too ya know. I'm going to try to get that pic of Cricket to you tomorrow if I can remember... o.O I'll stick a note to the middle of my monitor so I can't miss it when I get in here. lol... His fur is really starting to get thick and fill out... He's an amazing little critter. He's helped me a lot on the emotional side of losing so many companions in the fire... Thank you. -Mac |

Thank you Bud . I wish we lived closer to each other I would enjoy giving you a hand with the Flex. but you probably would not care for SU carburettors, Lucas wiring and Magneti Marrelli ignition. LOL |
