I would say you are right motion is motion. Just make sure it's MPH and not knots

why not just a GPS unit they read MPH and provide navigation and other useful info as well. I am building my dash and instrument console with digital readouts and the centre position where the old speedometer used to be will be a truckers GPS large screen. just a thought.

Last Dec. I ordered a Garmin 1390T from Wally world for the reason, my speedo does not work properly. So why spend $250.00 or more plus all the work, so my unit coast that plus a little more, but mine can go with me when I go for a walk. Just seen a Tom Tom at Wally world under 100, and it shows mph. If you want there is a Garmin 465 for big trucks but $$$. Only problem none have a RV/BUS/Truck, except 465 above, SO one must BE carefull. Anyway the coach tops out at 71 mph, and the GPS is super, I move it to the Jeep and it keeps me happy although sometimes one needs to do some manual detours and it recalculates.

I picked up a TomTom GPS and it has MPH and it works but the MPH is small. I called the company to see if I could inlarge the MPH read out but I cannot. Is there one that displays large MPH.

we picked up a GPS with a wireless back up camera at Canadian tire for about $200.00
the speed is displayed in one corner and time of day or arrival time in the other.
Just a thought that if you are going to invest might as well get the back up camera too

John,

Is that boat speedometer self-contained, my guess it has to be connected to a GPS??

I use my Garmin GPS for a speedometer when I need absolute accuracy even though the numbers are kind of small. It shows that my bus speedo is off by a few mph.

I think most GPS can be programmed for mph, knots or kpm but not sure of that.

The Garmin 465t is the one I have, if you press the little speedo on the screen, a big speedo shows up. Also all the trucker info is really useful, staying on the truck routes around metro areas keeps me out of trouble.

I travel for a living and have used a GPS for the last several years. Mine takes me through shortcuts sometimes getting down to a one lane gravel road. Lots of small bridges and tight curves fine for my pickup but a bus would NEVER get through. Pay the bucks and get one that comes with or that you can upgrade to the trucker's routes.
