While going thru some bus literature, I ran across a photo of the engine compartment of a GMC "Old Look" transit.

Although not highly detailed, it was obvious that the engine was a 6-71.

And that got me to wondering:

GM built thousands of these "Old Look" TD (Transit Diesel) coaches, far more than the 4104, which was produced during the same time period on adjacent assembly lines.

Both the PD and the TD shared the same engine, the PD with a manual trans, the TD available with either a manual trans or, more commonly, an automatic. (Sorry, I don't know which model AT was utilized.)

(Do you see where I'm going with this?)

Knowing GM's propensity for sharing as many common components as possible, it struck me that perhaps, (maybe?) that the "Old Look" transit's AT powertrain might just fit in the '04 w/o a lot of customization.

I know this is an unusual idea, and out of the norm for most '04 powertrain swaps, however, perhaps some of the more "experienced" bus-nuts out there might have some knowledge of the old transit's powertrain layout, and could comment based on their recollections.

This is the kind of thing that comes to mind on a boring Tuesday nite when practicing task-avoidance techniques. . .

6V71 not much improvement over a 6-71. Automatic bogs it down more. With a geared down rear axle it performs ok at transit speeds, but with a highway gear it won't run with todays' traffic. If you are going to all that work you might as well get a 8V71 or better yet a 6V92. The 6V92 can be easily raised to 350 HP, which will run fine.

Jim -

I think you misinterpreted my posting. I really wasn't talking about a modern powertrain swap. I was commenting on GM's historic use of common parts among various model lines, and mulling over the idea that an "Old Look" automatic powertrain might fit in an '04 w/o a bunch of modifications, simply because of the commonality of various components.

Take a look at this link:

http://www.pacbus.org/pbm246picpage.htm

If you were to be led blindfolded to the open engine compartment of this coach, then removed the blindfold, you'd swear you were looking at a 4104 powertrain, till you took a few steps backwards and looked at the coach itself.

Most of these suburbans came with automatics, manuals were pretty rare. And that's where my musing about using an "Old Look" AT powertrain in an '04 came about, 'cause #246 has an '04 powertrain in it - OEM from GM.

I realize it's not a modern swap, and I agree that a 6V92/V730 would be the hot ticket. This was more of a "thinking out loud" posting, with the hope that some of the older bus nuts who may have had some experience with the "Old Look" AT powertrains might be able to share their recollections.

Ah, the joys of this hobby. . . 8^)

What is a 8V92/V730 engine swap going for today?

The V730 is limited to only 280HP {sez Da Book} so the hot swop is the 6V92 ,

which can still be enough to rip apart the tranny, or snap rear axles.

IF you have it done , you will be out about $25,000 by time you get to drive it home.

Big job with new cooling required huge bulkhead rebuild , reinforcement ect.

One gent who did this to an 04 sez it sure flattens hills!!!

The old look GM's had the same engine but you would not want the automatic they used. It was called a VH. It was a 2 speed and if I remember right was only a single disc clutch in it. It was very simple inside but you would probably not find parts to repair it if anything happened to it. Look at the engine if you need one but not at the tranny. Bill
