We are finally going to get a bigger toad.

Our choice is Honda CRV , it can be flat towed with an auto tranny , and has a timing chain , no timing belt to destroy the engine.

There are 3 companies that make base plates , all similar priced about $300 .

Blue OX ,Roadmaster and Demco .

The fitting instructions on line seem similar , so does anyone have some input?

All seem to need a trim of some plastic ,not a big deal , as out VW Diesel toad is a 1980 , so resale is not a factor.

Any good or bad experiences with these mfg?

Things to watch out for?

I have used Remco base plates on 4 different vehicles and never had a problem. On my Sebring they didn't have an exact listing so they sent a base plate for a Breeze. They worked with me to see if it would work and when I told them it fit they now list it for the Sebring as well. A great company to deal with.

I love my Blue Ox set up on the Jeep Liberty. The Jeep Liberty is actually a very good toad too.

Try hitchtrader.com. You might find a good used one for half that price.

Hitchtraider.com was a good idea , but no luck.

Lots of other towing goodies tho !

The new CRV takes hours to take a large part of the front of the car apart , so someone really has to need what they would get for the used baseplate , 3 or 4 hours of work!

I had a CRV and it worked fine as a towed. When we traded it, it just wasn't worth the time and trouble to remove the baseplate and restore the car to original. I doubt you will find any used ones out there. It took me about half a day to install with significant drilling, hammering, and cussing.

As I understand it, the new (2010) CRV's are no longer approved for towing. I don't know if it is a drive line change or just a warranty issue.

Before plunking down the deposit I checked the Owners Handbook , and towing is OK, just every 8 hours there is a lube the tranny procedure that's required.

Start, shift thru the gears ,shut down.

Max tow speed limited to 75 UGH!

I stop more frequently than every 8 hours to drain the Belly Tank, so it wont be a bother .
