I took a set of air horns off my old picker truck to mount on the bus (MC8). Does anyone know a easy way to mount these on the roof above driver seat. I still have the original bus inner ceiling in this area and don't want to cut a big ugly hole for the air valve. Also what route has been used to run the air line up to the horns, hopefully hidden away. I will probably start the run from the spare tire bay. Any info or suggestions would be appreciated. |

Not exactly what you are asking, but on our 4107 the horn is behind the bumper. No holes in the roof to leak, easy to plumb, and nothing on the roof to catch on a stray tree branch. Don 4107 |

My 4106 horns are mounted behind the front bumper in a box designed for them, keeps water out. I always figured the IDEAL place to mount air horns is in the backseat of that idiot in front of you that caused you to use them in the first place! Location, location location...ya know? |

We installed 2 pair of air horns in the compartment under the driver's seat on our MC-8. Each set is controlled by a separate solenoid. We also installed a train whistle on the side above the driver's side window. we had built a chase out of 1/4 oak that runs from the floor to the overhead compartment above the driver's seat. This is directly behind the driver's side window and allowed a place to run the air line to the train whistle. The whistle is controlled by a ball valve to the left of the driver's seat. |

Ours is located under the driver, behind the bumper where it's out of sight until you lay on it to get someone's attention. Cleaner look and no leaks in your cap! |

Ours is under the driver seat...below the floor, next to the wheel horn....no exposure, no leaks to worry about. FWIW RCB |

OK, interesting info. Do you fellows with the horns under the floor have cut-outs in the bay in front of the horns? Are the horns loud enough out in front? I have a plant emergency evacuation horn with a 24 inch diameter outlet, I was thinking of mounting it but I would most likely be arrested for noise violations. Hey Jack, you say you have a train whistle, I have the old steam whistle off our old Case steam engine that I have hooked to my shop air compressor, I was thinking of hooking it to the bus as well. Do you have a pic you could post to show how it looks? I would really like to see it. Thanks all for info. |

Ours are located above driver and the pull valve is located in the interior area, there is a drop down area above the driver, Its the compartment that holds our tv.There is a leather cord that hangs down for the driver to pull. We don't pull it very often, last occurence sent a beligerent bread truck driver accross 4 of 6 lanes and the back again, quickly, Scared the begeezzees outa me, can't imagine what it did to him. Also resist the urge to play "Cool Uncle Dave" at family reuions, kids learn quick, aunts who specialize in bakeing pies for family reunions forget slowly. Thanks Dave H |

We used to have ours mounted on the side angled down, next to the driver. It is now under the driver. Less wind resistance and cleaner look for us. Pay heed to Dave's warning above. It will let people in the distance recieve notice but it frightens the cars up close into doing dumb moves such as full stops etc. Ours is operated by a foot valve and is not as precise as the pull chain but quicker to find in an emergency. Dont worry, they are loud! We have the dual tone hi low. Dori has the low rumble set with the pull cord, and roof mounted.Looks and sounds better but not as good in a pinch. |

Here is a photo of our train whistle. I mounted it horizontally (and pointed slightly down so would not trap water). No holes in front of the air horns, but no problem hearing them. "No matter how strong, rich or powerful you become for a moment, in the next moment someone else will top you". The words of my old man. We are ALL Pikers when it comes to superlative. With that in mind, have a look at the people who REALLY have THE horns.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDJPLxwuMyA AND see how much commotion they can create! The 1st 12 seconds of this video are silent, so your ears can adjust I presume.....turn UP your volume for a treat IF you are a BIG horn lover. BTW there is a whole 'nother sub-culture of Steam Whistle fans as well.....for me, the sound of them drills thru my Spirit like a Sirens song....YouTube has a raft of them as well! |
