I may be looking at a rebuild of a 6v92TA.

Whats the best route?

In frame if its doable?

Buy a rebuilt?

What should this run?

An in-frame is the way to go, but only if the engine hasn't been in-framed a couple of times already. Usually an 71 or 92 can be inframed a couple of times before it needs to come out and have the block, cams and crank go through a machine shop. Also, after a couple of in-frames the end plate and flywheel housing gaskets leak like crazy and need to be replaced. Prices for in-frame and rebuilt exchange engines vary so I won't get into that, just make sure you deal with people that are thoroughly familiar with Detroit Diesels.

I would be looking real hard at either 8.3 Cummins or Series 50 DD before I would put more than a $1000 of repairs in a 2 cycle. They are lighter, cleaner, more efficient, double the tourque, smoother, and quieter.
If your considering an overhaul because it "burns" oil. If its "burning" it, thats fuel and really not wasted. And you can buy an awfull lot of oil for the price of a rebuild. And your back bumper will never rust!

Wouldn't a conversion to a different engine be a big job?

You didn't say what type of bus, but if a left hand engine the conversion would be a major pain in the ***. Even if it is right hand engine all the 4 strokers will give you is slightly better fuel economy. If I am not mistaken, a 350HP 6V92TA has more torque than either the 8.3 or the shakemup up baby series 50.

Besides contrary to most information posted the 2 stroke engine is a newer design than the 1890s 4 stroke diesel.
