seem to have a little dribble of gear oil on my drive axle rim. Is this going to be a big hassle?Am I going to need to buy a seal or can I use some goop?

Find out where it's comming from first.

Some hubs have a drain plug that can leak.

Is there oil on the brake shoes? If they are wet, you will need to change the seal for sure.

If it is just the outer axle seal, you can remove the axle and use silacone.

First if the shield(slinger) is doing its job there will NOT be oil on the shoes. When the wheel seal leaks the shield funnels it to holes in the drum/hub area and out the wheel, over flow will go down inside of drum, then get on shoes. My drive axle seal did just that, but my tag axle seal did not so shoes got wet. Will just clean shoes on tag and reuse. So pull the wheels and drum and check. The seal installer plate was $45.00 last Nov. at NAPA in N.M. Yes I installed new front and drive axle seals last year and the right drive seal acctually cracked and leaked after only 3200miles.

good time to change over or back to synthetic grease packed bearings with appropriate sealing components. Also you can use a propane torch to help sweat the grease out of the pores of the shoes. Get them hot, but not hot enough to damage lining. You'll see the grease/oil sweat out of the shoe. Do it a couple of times with cleaning with a good solvent or brake clean in between heatings.Do this thoughtfully and with care so we don't need to call the fire department. :-) Make sure you get the rivet or bolt holes clean. Do the same for the drum; especially at any cracks.

Do as you feel led,

but for the decision making of the busnut novice:

you will find no manufacturer or brake engineering person recommend anything but lining replacement, if the shoe is contaminated with axle lube.

It cannot be determined to what extent the lube has been absorbed, or to what extent the cleaning techniques employed have worked, or to what extent the cleaning techniques have damaged the linings.

What testing has shown is that a contaminated lining cannot grip the inside of the drum as well, and lengthened stopping distances are the result.

tough decisions when on a budget.

happy coaching!

the reason i ask is that the right rear outer rim had just a little bit of greese colected in it last spring. i cleaned it off and haven't noticed any other kind of leaks since, but am planning on a 2k mile trip back to the carolinas for the summer.would feel better knowing that the fluid level was correct!

Chris,

The 4104 uses grease in the hub, not oil from the rear end. If you have oil in the hub your seal/s are leaking.

It may be leaking thinned grease onto the wheel because the hub was overfilled with grease. This happened to my front wheels. The hubs are supposed to only be coated with grease, not filled.

You check the rear end oil via the plug at the front of the differential housing.

My '54 s/n is 1274.

Chris,

Sorry I missed your post because it was a day after we left for our 3000mi trip and I didn't get back to this board for awhile.

The only tow I ever made was 800mi with a Chevy Cavalier with the front wheels on a dolly. It probably weighed 2800 lb or less. I didn't know it was there either under power or braking.

A dolly puts very little weight on the hitch and makes towing easy except you can't back up.
