Back last July I asked: I had my 4905 serviced at a truck stop last week, and one more time they did not have a oil filter in stock. I had a spare, but a common spin on type would be much better. There are adapters for the older cars to use a spin on, is there such a thing for the 8v71? ----------- FAST FRED said: YES Your local NAPA or DD store should be able to get one , about $75 from DD lots cheaper in a truck store or NAPA. There worth the cost in engine wear as you can easily pre fill the spin on with lube oil & reduce the dry running time after the oil change. ----------------------- I just got back from my second trip to NAPA. They can not find the B 1303 adapter in their books or on the computer... They said that if I knew what brand it is (Napa sells lots of stuff that does not have their brand name on it) than they could find it easy.... FF? Anyone? Thanks, Peter |

Peter, my wallet cringes each time I think about the $12 to 15.00 dollar difference between the two types of filter. Hey Freddie... I always pre-fill my old canister type before I spin the bolt up tight. No dry time for me either. Peter I got the checque. ...JJ |

The truck stops prefill the canisters too... The spin on filters are that much more? Maybe I should just take on a stock of canister filters, trouble is they always end up dumping a gallon or two on the ground before they are successful in getting a seal. |

If your locals cant find the adapter , just go to DD and buy one , the extra few bucks DD costs will save lots of runing around. Purchase the DD filters by the CASE , and there cheap enough. After all you only need one every 6000 miles! FAST FRED |

AC/Delco makes the adaptor for DD, and I think Baldwin used to sell them also, as well as several major filter manufacturers-- youi just have to find it in their catalog. The adaptors use the same paper gasket as the cannister filers use, so after a couple of years the adaptor gasket has to be replaced when it starts leaking. As far as keeping the cannister filers (much cheaper), they work okay, but there is a trick to putting them on, and you MUST replace the paper gasket each time you change filters or it will leak. The way I have found to install the cannister filters is to push the cannister up in place until you can get the bolt started, then hold the cannister straight and aligned as you tighten the bolt. And I have changed hundreds of these things... --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Thanks Geoff. I will go back to NAPA, they should be able to set me up with that info. going to a DD dealer is not an easy option for me here... |

Change filter every 6000 miles??? At that rate, I'll need one about every 10 YEARS. |

Goeff, certian Baldwin filter boxes have a copper gasket that replaces the old style paper one under the bolt. If the filter comes in a plastic bag it has the paper one, in a white cardboard box it has the copper one. Same part number...go figure! If you have trouble with leakage as you try to align the bolt, I will venture that the spring inside the cannister is missing! Cheers...JJ |

FWIW, NAPA filters are made by WIX. Who also makes alot of filters for everybody. They also hold the formulas for different types of paper that is also sold to everyone. Wix has been round for ever. No matter what you buy WIX is in one of them. Fram is much better since Alied Signal bought them. Napa always made me a deal on filters. No other filter people would even bother to quote me. smoke,rattle&,stink.......docdezl |

The DD book sez every 6000 miles for transit service , and I think the RV use comes close. If you wish to count the other way every 150 hours or ONCE A YEAR is the what Da Book has in mind. FAST FRED |

Another filter brand used by most over-the-road trucks is Luberfiner, I used them for years, and still do in my 6-71 (local cost 13.35). John 4104 |
