Has anyone had experiance with putting one of the large industrial Onan generators in a bus? I see lots of JC model units that have been used by stores as backups for sale. They are 10-15kw and use propane. They have few hours and seem to be built like tanks. And the prices are quite reasonable. Yhey stopped making them about twelve years ago but an Onan rep told me they were some of the best they ever made and maintenance parts are still readily avalible. They weigh about 600# and will just about squeeze into the bay of an mc9. Would they be too noisy, use too much fuel, vibrate too much? They are air cooled, so I would need to provide good ventilation. Thanks William 83mc9 |

I have a 7.5 two cylinder 180degree that uses gasoline, been using it for 20 years, I think it will go another 20, almost no vibration, very quiet (I've never measured db but it is quieter than most I park next to), no leaks, I change the oil every 30 days. jpwinks 83 MCI9 |

Frank I know what you are talking about. The 7.5kw MDJE Onan that I have is built like a tank but it gives you a massage if you sit on the chesterfield when it is running. I got rid of a lot of the noise with special insulation and mine is the water cooled type so that helps also. I was given an air cooled 6.0kw Onan diesel but it is only good for a small standby unit where noise is not a concern. Bill |
