We're sitting on this ridge top in NC. and looking at the trees around us Most seem to have been hit by lightning at some point in time.I was wondering if anyone has thought about trying to protect a bus against lightning? ...so I don't become food for thought?? |

Steve, First, I am curious, where in NC? We are sitting on a ridge near Mayodan, NC (just across the State line from Martinsville, VA). Hopefully Sean will post more information, but since our coach sits on rubber tires, I have never been too concerned about a direct hit. I am more concerned with a surge through the shoreline cord. If a lot of lightning is poppin', I unplug our shoreline. Jack |

I'm with Jack on this. We're seldom connected to shore power or any other type of ground, and so it is generally a non-issue for us. If we see lightning approaching, we might stow the internet satellite dish, just so it is not the tallest thing around. IF we happened to be plugged in when a lightning storm hits, I just go out and unplug. We have a detachable cord and I unplug it from the coach side, so there is no possibility of a path to ground through the cord. While a direct lightning strike on a coach is unlikely to harm you, because the current will flow around the outside skin, it will indeed damage any electronics on board, to include engine and tranny computers (ECMs or ECUs), TV's, computers, stereos, etc. etc. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |

The Brickwall, and other similar devices are installed to keep a lightning strike from a nearby hit from going into your 120-240v system. FF |

We're in Murphy, 4 miles and 15 miles from Ga. and Tenn. The other end of the state from Jack. We live between here and Fla. and never knew Nc. would be as "inlightining" as Okeechobee. Would the water line also act as a ground? The AC service is buried here and there seems to be a storm everyday/nite.Has anyone ever used the twisilers thingys to repel a strike? Are they any use at all?Lots of iron in the ground and water around here! thanks |

Ain't nothing going to "repel" a strike. Lightening is going to hit anything it wants and it doesn't have to hit the highest thing around either. |

PS. anything that connects your bus to the ground is going to be a path for the lightening, so yes a water hose will conduct a strike. |

Another PS. People have been hit by lightening even though the nearest cloud to them was up to 10 miles away, hence the expression, "out of a clear blue sky". |

I believe the trees that you see are from the ice storm we had last winter. Not lightning. We have some beautiful lightning storms in the summer but the damage is very little. The blue ridge parkway is just now getting open due to the tree damage. uncle ned |

Steve, Wow, we live pretty close to each other in FL too. We are in Arcadia. If you are in Florida next December 29 to January 1, 2011, you should plan to attend Bussin' 2011 in Arcadia. This would give you a chance to see around 125-150 coaches (and no 2 alike). Jack |

When he was in England , Ben Franklyn installed lightning rods for the Brits on their powder supply at armories. The Brits had them removed thinking it was Sabotage , that the rods would call the lightning out of the sky! FF |

If you have ever hit the lottery big time, I'd worry. Otherwise, worry about other things, like the refer quitting and the beer getting warm. |

"Another PS. People have been hit by lightening even though the nearest cloud to them was up to 10 miles away, hence the expression, "out of a clear blue sky"." My High School buddy & I were up in Tyrone, Ont. in June of '71 on a clear afternoon. While standing in a circle watching a model gas airplane being flown on a string by 3 guys in the center of the circle. In the blink on an eye & w/o any warning, 100 spectators were throw 20 feet then slammed to the ground by a a single lightning strike. One of the guys in the center was killed & the other 2 unable to move. We came-to about 10 seconds after the strike, with no burns or visible damage & managed to walk away from the chaos around us, still tinglie feeling & in shock. I fear lightning.... but not as much as a slow death in a "health care" facility, the latter having odds a thousand time higher. |

Steve, The one nice thing about bussing vs boating is if something breaks you just pull over to the side of the road....no bailing required |
