Yeah? So what's wrong with that? "NEW YORK, June 16 (UPI) -- Authorities said a Greyhound bus driver accused of stealing a $600,000 coach in New York told investigators he wanted to visit his girlfriend out of town." Full story here Beep-beep |

stealing a $600,000 Someone is deluded , this was just a bus , not a bus conversion. $600,000 I don't think so. FF |

Fred, I was working with a bus conversion company 7 years ago. At that time a new Prevost conversion shell which is a gutted tin shell with a nice paint job cost them $750,000. The converted coach was 1.6 million. So a seated coach with entertainment and upholstered walls, ceiling and a restroom could cost 600K today. Besides, everything costs more in New York! |

Yes a bus CAN go for that and MORE in today's world, not yesteryear! Consider the source and you'll know what I mean! |

As I count on my fingers , it seems to me that a $600,000 bus would require $1000 interest payment every day! I don't know anyone in the charter business that can count on that , along with insurance , fuel, maint , and drivers pay. Even a real fleet coach should be hard pressed to create that level of pay outs, every single day of the year!! How do they operate at this cost level? The fancy tour buckets with TV and stewardess might bring in enough , bit EVERY! day? FF |

Depreciating the bus 10% per year, and figuring 10% interest on 600K, I come up with $329 per day. The guys that lease the Hound it's buses borrow money way cheaper than 10%, the loan amount isn't 600K for the entire term, there is value left in the bus at 10 years, and the lessor takes depreciation. So I'm thinking $329 is probably 1/3 above the daily cost. Can a line haul Hound bus generate $500 going about 320 miles per day? |

"Can a line haul Hound bus generate $500 going about 320 miles per day?" Greyhound's fares average about $0.15/mile/passenger. Slightly higher on the short runs, slightly lower on the long ones. So, at an average of 30 passengers (on a 47 passenger bus) over a 300 mile run, the gross revenue would be about $1350.00. Not counting any package express downstairs. Most routes are now thru routes, ie: San Francisco > New York, Seattle > Los Angeles, Los Angeles > Miami; Miami > New York. The buses run 24/7 on these runs, so they'll cover approximately 1,200 miles in a day. That translates to about $5400 gross revenue per 24 hrs, using the example above, or roughly $162,000.00 per month. Sounds good on paper, but reality is that drivers for 'Hound nowadays carry duct tape in their bag to tape panels back onto the coach due to lousy PM - one of the areas the company's cut way back on. And don't forget to add in all the other typical operating overhead a business encounters and it becomes obvious why they can't make money like they used to back in their heyday. Run very hard, and put away sopping wet, that's today's Greyhound! As FF pointed out - it's VERY difficult to make it in the bus industry today with the equipment required to be competitive. FWIW & HTH. . .

Not uncommon for a driver to pinch a bus to get home when the car breaks down, etc. Funny how it is commonly found at some other terminal in the suburbs... Lease on a late model coach could be had for as low as someplace $7500 a month from the bottom feeders. Don't expect the tires to be a matched set.... Then you insure it, pay the driver, fuel it... Trouble is, a carrier can really suck the equity out of that asset by selling it low on their way to bankruptcy, and harm all the other carriers in their market in the process. Same as trucking, only the asset is a way more expensive. RJ has it nailed. The line haul coach industry was doomed with the de-regulation of the airlines long ago and far away, and the creation of subsidized public owned commuter lines. happy coaching! buswarrior |
