Just joining. I have a 1984 Marathon 102" wide. It is totally stripped of everything. I hope to install a 2000 windshield when raising the roof and installing LR/Bdrm slides. I am putting a 8V92 engine in it. Am going to look into the Series 60 engine for price. |

Lawrence: I recently purchased a 1984 Le mirage with an 8V71 6 speed manual. I was curious about your engine. What modifications are necessary to go to the 8v92 or the 60 series. In particular, how is the engine cooling system modified? Stan in Ohio ps..Who are you thinking about doing your exterior painting? |

Hi Stan mine is a '82 Champion , it has the 8v71 and 6 speed spicer as well. I'm quite happy with it, it is a good ballance of power and economy, mind you I live in eastern central Canada (Quebec/Ontario) so it's not like the hills out west. An 8v92TA came in the Prevost in the late 80's so a swap should be quite straight forward, I think the trany swap is more of an issue. A series 60 is a modern 4 stroke deisel and they don't come cheap $$$$. Has any one looked into a Detroit Diesel series 50? A lot of companys are converting their older coachs to this power plant. |

Stan I did a 8v71 six speed swap to a silver 8v92TA 740 allison. Here are the changes you can expect (1) New rad (2) New larger drive shaft and u-joints. (3) New Gen ( the belt driven type won't work on a 92) (4) New air filter tank and piping (5) New muffler and piping (6) New 32" fan (7) Turbo will hit the bus raised floor, you will have to raise it higher. (8) I built a complete Prevost type slide in engine cradle that holds the engine and trans as one unit. (9) Modify rad piping. (10) New water pump. (11) Double oil cooler with gaskets. (12) Trans and motor oil filters with bases and new hoses. For your formation a 60 series is 14" longer then a V8 Detroit and will not fit a 40' Prevost unless you lengthen the bus or buy a wishbone tag axle. You could try a 50 series but the HP is not that great.Hope this helps. |

Glang and Michael: Thanks for the valuable information. The 50 series is an interesting option. I will contact Detroit Diesel and get specifications. Admittedly, I would love to have the horsepower of the 8V92 but I am concerned about the overheating. If I can get 365+hp out of the series 50 I think this could be an option. |

For information: I spoke to a Detroit Diesel representative in Cincinnati and they said the series 50 was a 320hp engine that delivers 1150 ft.lbs. torque. They also recommended against the mechanical to electronic engine swap $$$$ Stan |

Michael & Stan Last summer I swapped my 8V71n & RTO12510(roadranger)for an 8V92T/A & an Allison HT-740 auto trans. Inasmuch as the "92" is very little longer than than the "71" the swap is relatively straight forward. I agree with most Of Clang's comments with the exception of the following. You may not need a new radiator. If you have the optional large unit, it will work. Check w/Prevost. As for the new alternator(Gen.), you don't have to change it unless you want to. All that's required is a pulley like the one on the "71" out side the dampener. you may need to move your gen mount to line up with the pulley, probably back a bit. The sliding cradle is nice but not necessary. In my case I modified my back mounts, and replaced the front mounts with MCI mounts that fasten on each side of the dampener pulley, then a simple channel mount frame to frame. It works perfectly. As to the water pump, the one on my "92" is essentially the same as the "71", so maybe you won't need one. Another thing you will probably have to do is modify your transverse swaybar in front of the manual transmission. The 740's longer. By the way, this was done on our '80 Prevost Le Mirage. Believe me, going from 318hp to 475hp is well worth the time and expense Paul M |
