Hi, I have noticed that the MAN D2566 and the Mercedes-Benz OM407 diesels are similar units; I am guessing it was MAN who did the engineering for both and that the OM407 was made under license. Correct? Case in point: same bore and stroke, and all. How many other diesels did MAN produce that were also licensed to MBZ? Example: I can conjure up the OM447, as I think that is another MAN-sourced engine for that is also the MAN D2866 if I am not mistaken. Another fine example of badge-engineering is the Chrysler/Nissan CN-6-33, which to Nissan itself is the SD33 or 6-33. Then, Chrysler's other badge-engineered diesel was the Mitsubishi 6DR5, which to Chrysler was the CI-655-100. Thank you, Ben Edge (BusNut1981) |

The truth is: why did Mercedes-Benz have MAN badge-engineer some of their '70s-'90s Class 8 truck and bus engines? This particular partnership is what made the D2566 be sold as the MBZ OM407 and the subsequent D2866 as the MBZ OM447. (Message edited by BusNut1981 on June 22, 2010) |

why did Mercedes-Benz have MAN badge-engineer some of their '70s-'90s Class 8 truck and bus engines? It is harder and harder (and far more expensive) to get engines passed worldwide for the Air Police. Why a truck in NY_NJ should have cleaner exhaust than what is going in the intake is still a mistery to me. Happily the complaints since '03 of crappy mileage , low power , poor running and Insane repair costs have caused most Mfg to dump EGR as unworkable. The new approach is a fine running, powerful, fuel efficient engine and "fixing" the burorat demands with Urea in the exhaust system. Every 1 mpg improvement is about $7000 a year/100,000 miles for the operator , so a few hundred for Exhaust Solution is an OK trade. Seems this is the future for VW , BMW and most of the class 8 truck builders. Mack is even creating a modern diesel from the ground up , with the Urea exhaust . FF |

Detroit Diesel has created a new series of Diesels just for use with Urea or Diesel Exhaust Fluid. They are DD13 (350hp-470hp, 1250-1650lb/ft torque), DD15 (455hp-535hp, 1450-1850lb/ft), DD16 (475hp-600hp, 1750-2050lb/ft). The nice thing about these engines is that they are the MOST fuel efficient engines EVER made for trucks. With properly driven trucks, we should easily see in the 8's mpg. Think about getting 8mpg with 80,000lb loads! Good Luck, TomC |

By the way-Mack is no longer making truck engines. Mack trucks are all powered by Volvo engines. |

MAN has been making top quality diesel truck engines and trucks many, many years. They made many German military vehicles during WW2. Their engines are probably as good as or better than MBs. MAN also made the engines for the first Trailways Golden Eagles, those were some buses!! Tom, I thought Mack was bought out in the '80s by Renault and started using their truck diesel engines, has that changed? I know Macks have not actually been Macks for many years. Renault made some really big diesel trucks in the 50's and probably still do. I was always amazed that their trucks were so huge and their cars so small. (Message edited by gusc on July 07, 2010) |

Volvo bought out Renault in about 1998-2000. They intentionally got the bulldog as part of the bargain. |

MB/DTNA (Daimler Trucks of North America)owns: Buses - Setra, Orion, DC Vans & Thomas Built Bus Trucks - Freightliner & Western Star. They shut Sterling about a year & a half ago. They sold off ALF (American LaFrance)/Condor about 5 years ago. ALF has since shut down Condor. |
