Does anyone know if the bell housing from a 6v71
in an MCI can be used with a 6v92 engine out of a
truck? In other words do both engines have the
same bolt hole pattern on the back end where the
bell housings bolt up?

Hi John:
You converted coach folks come up with the greatest questions!!!

I am in my 41st year working in the bus industry and questions such as yours prompt me to look for answers that I did not know before the question was asked.

I read a while back, that people who keep their brain stimulated are less prone to Alzheimers Disease, and for that I am grateful at 60 years old!!!!

I got out my MC5C parts manual & looked for the part number for the gasket that goes between the bellhousing & engine end plate. Of course that number superceeded 2 times to a current part number.
I then got out my MC-9 parts book and looked for the same gasket.
What I found is that the gasket from bellhousing to end plate are the same for both engines.
I therefore think you will not have a problem swapping the 2 bellhousings.
I Hope I am correct and I hope this HELPS!!!!

Luke you are right as far as it goes, but the seal for the crank on the 92 is larger than the 71 at least on the 8V engines but all is not lost there is enough meat in the seal housing to re-machine and make room for the 92 seal fwiw.

...and don't forget to check the length of that bellhousing as well... .060 in OAL could be a problem, if your a bit long you can machine for that as well at the same time.

Hey Merlin:
I thought about the rear main seal on the way home. Unfortunately it is late when I get to post and didn't have my thinking cap completely on.
Thanks for watching out for this "Old Guy" and keeping the facts straight for the questioner.

I noticed in several previous posts a discussion that the crank rotation in truck engines is the reverse for bus engines. Does this apply here?

Only applies in GM or V-drive coaches

Besides the larger seal, the 6V92 flywheel housing has a couple of extra holes for bolts that the 71 housing doesn't have. Luke points out that the gasket is the same, but if you look at one you will notice that the gasket is made with detachable pieces so that it fits different applications. However, if I recall correctly people have been able machine the housing for a bigger seal and successfully used the 71 housing on a 92, but I would think that you would have to change the end plate too.
