David...the NM MVD should be able to help you...no problem for me in 2001...registered at 26,000lbs, Motor Home. They do a brief inspection and want to see the VIN. Would strongly suggest a smaller community office to accomplish...as I recall, we went to Alamogordo. I believe you can find the specific information on that in the Archives, circa July/August,2001. Have seats out. RCB...Las Cruces |

In AZ (next door, similar reasoning) You drive the coach in for a standard (emphasis on air brakes) safety inspection THEN they want to see the kitchen & bathroom sinks run actual water & into a proper tank (roll-eyes here) Same deal with the toilet & shower if you're the hoity-toidy type. Once you have passed the grueling inspection by underpaid employees of the great state of AZ (they do hire the blind & have no eye glasses insurance either! You're home free & on the road...plate in hand! If you're rig is safely ready for the road & the utilities are in & working it's a cinch. (Message edited by Jack_fids on June 24, 2010) |

We are in a small town (Socorro). I just wondered if there was anything in particular that we had to do. So if we convert to basics then we should be okay. We will have to move into it before the project is finished... luckily it isn't a coach (it's a skoolie... "horrors & shock") so we are not converting to really high standards (not enough time and no space to work). I've just got to get the "messy" parts done so I can finish converting in a campground somewhere over the NM winter. Lorna (Message edited by davidschinske on June 24, 2010) |

Lorna.....be a bit more specific....and don't be a bit concerned about a "skoolie"... We have one too (in the opinion of many), but it works for us!! High standards is not a requirement either.....what works for you is! So answer a few questions, and maybe, just maybe, we can help make it easier: 1) are the seats out? 2) is it a shell, or have you put "something" in it. 3) if you have put something in it does it qualify for "personal use" or could it be construed as for "commercial use"?....and that is the key. Once a unit is taken out of commercial use, it is no longer classed as a "conveyance"...it is an RV, Motor Home, or whatever the state wants to call it. My license plate says RV. As I recall, the Registration says Motor Home (could be wrong there) You simply need to "prove" (convince, cajole, demand- )....that it is NOT for conveyance of the public...in New Mexico, at least. Once you have registered as above, you should not have any trouble anywhere...we have traveled thru Canada to Nova Scotia and back thru many states with no problem! FWIW and.....BEST Wishes! (Socorro should be good to GO...as it were!!! ) RCB |

Same in California, Not for Hire or conveyance of the public chattel "for hire". They are classified AS "MH" on the registration and referred to as House Car or Private Coach. No inspections and no smog for diesels if older than 83 or 86 But that won't even be until 2012. No commercial Driver License (CDL)needed either. |

1) are the seats out? No seats.. we took them all out so that we could use the bus as a moving van to bring all our stuff (or what we didn't sell) from NC to NM. 2) is it a shell, Shell only, except for a few things that I refuse to move out of the bus (too heavy) like my 30" gas range(it stays in the bus) and the 10 ton Kohler cast iron triple bowl sink (there is no way I am moving that thing again... it will be shifted around in the bus until I get the sink cabinet and countertops in... then it will be installed and that will be the last time I have to pick that sucker up). 3) if you have put something in it does it qualify for "personal use" or could it be construed as for "commercial use"? Just my junk! I think that would be considered "personal". I have no concerns about it being recognized as a motorhome/RV by other states. From what I have read on the skoolie boards just making sure it has no yellow paint (and it doesn't... it was used to transport whitewater rafters in SC/NC)and the "signal" lights removed will be okay. As for the "high standards"... we did have an Eagle 05 that we were going to convert (back when I had originally posted on this forum). We dumped the Eagle (literally scrapped it) and bought the skoolie because of economics (no construction going on in Western NC so David had no job) started up a new business... look here and you will see what we have left of the Eagle05... the original "box" is the inner skin of the Eagle... it's the Eagle 05.1 :P http://s570.photobucket.com/albums/ss150/lornaschinske/?start=all... worked it for a couple of months in NC & GA to get a good feel for it... then headed out to NM (we wintered in Corpus Christi TX... not good). Right now I'm stuck in a stick-n-staples RV (full-time since 2006) with our Bluebird "moving van" sitting next to us in my daughters back yard.It will be a "git-it-done" conversion.. with a little extra time involved in order to get a few things fitted in (like my 1800's mahogany rocking chair, the 1926 craftsman fireplace mantle we salvaged from our last remodel, my gas range that I've only used about 6 months but it was bought in 2002... our kingsize water bed that we have had for decades... it will be cut down to accept a standard 54" mattress and my cedar lined blanket Chest David built me for a wedding present), since we have no house to keep these things in anymore (and they have spent too much time in a storage shed). I'm trying to get the interior cleaned up and working on the windows, heating system/lights/etc. I have my plans drawn out and just need to go do some pricing this weekend to see what we can buy out here to use in the conversion process. I do know one thing... I WANT AN AIR CONDITIONER!!!!!! Okay, NM is a bit of a shock from the soggy, wet, GREEN Appalachian mountains (when I start missing it too much, I can watch "last of the mohicans" since it was shot in the mountains west of Asheville and they used one of my favourite, frequently visited spots, "Dry Falls" in the movie)... shoot, the BlueBird was a greenish white with moss growing in the the corners of the windows when we left NC... about the time we hit the TX/LA state line it was ... brownish (we left NC on July 3rd, 2009). I do think NM is beautiful, just in a different way. |

D&L We are finishing up our MC5CS soon and will be going full time also. Construction in California went away also. We watched Craigslist for Cabinet pull outs from houses and garages in the free section. I would go pick them up and then tear them apart for the oak and make trim and new cabinets out of them. Cut them down to fit, sand down and stain and Lacquer them. Found a brand new stove/ oven also for 1/2 price. Just a few things that helped our new budget which is a lot les than our old one. Good Luck Dave |

Lorna....I remember ya!......and, from what I am seeing from you, .... You are good to go here in NM. Only other thing might be a "john"... But I really think you will have no problem... Give it a try...what can you lose?. If it does not work in Socorro, use the experience and go to Belen....or whereever the next nearest MVD is located. I imagine T or C has one. Stay positive and just Do It!... RCB |

I bought a church bus in 1984 and our band used it in central Fla to go to gigs, sleeping, parties etc. It still had Masaryktown Baptist church on the sides was painted white, crosses on the flashing lites up top. That was during the Jim Baker days. we took every beer and liquor poster with a hot babe on it and had them facing out covering all the windows. We thought we were very clever at the time! Swat team (maybe just local sherriffs) woke us up in a rest area at 4 am in Lake City. removing church name was part of bus release agreement!! And I had it titled as RV |
