....any new suggestions for type, etc, that might be of help? The last set is (was) 6 years old, Marine deep cycle group 27.

I can accommodate 6 Golf cart batteries on the tray...11 inches in height max battery height (for comfortable clearance. Is there a real advantage to these over other types. I have a Trace 2000 Inverter w/three stage charger.

...yes, I've looked at the archives! :-) :-)

Thanx

Chuck

If you have done some reading in the archives, you will know that t 105 golfcarts are allways preferred over group 27 type. Amphours and that kind of stuff might seem like Greek to you but so is insurance to this guy. Buy them, nurture them, dont abuse them and I dont think you will be sorry having gone this route.

Joe.

The ONLY way to actually do the above will require a SOC reading.

State Of Charge

Many co make them , bogartengineering.com is lowest priced and does work.

If you are a boondocker and hate purchasing/replacing batteries , there is no other choice .

I replaced my 8 golf cart 6volt batteries last year, originally bought from Sam's. I got 6 years out of the 1st set and replaced with the same. I even ran them dry twice. I was very pleased with the service of them.

Thanx for the remarks, folks...as I had pretty much concluded, but, as one knows, there is always something new.....or not :-)

David, I have had 8D's...albeit, no deep cycle. 1) Way too heavy for me....BTDT. 2) Much too Much for what one gets. I have replaced 8D starts at two years...not only in the coach, but in a Crane I once owned ( and both instances, used only as starts). Much prefer group 31s for starts...and now, I think, Golf 6 volts for House...

We'll see. :-) :-)

Thanx, Guys!

Space or money?

The Golf carts are the best bang per buck, but if space is limited the taller (like Trojan L-16)are great as a bus usually has the hight to install and service them.

If the house re charge will be a rapid charge from a noisemaker with big belted alt and sailboat 3 -4 stage regulator , "Hydrocaps", will be worth their cost in service time.

Just charging from a little noisemaker and a 120 battery charger will not need them as much.

I've searched Internet prices and it appears that the L-16 is 325 Amp/hr, 17 3/4" tall and $299. The T-605 is 210 Amp/hr, 11" tall, and about 40% the cost (~$125) of the L-16. My battery box will accept 3 pairs of the L-16 and 4 pairs of the L-605 for 12V.

Using the L-605's would give me 840 Amp/hr/12V for $1000;
Using the L-16's would give me 975 Amp/hr/12V for $1800.

I think I'm comparing "apples to apples" (battery type, etc.) Comments, please.

Bruce

No question which way I would go, 80% premium in cost to get 16 % increase in capacity does not make a whole lot of sense. I would go with the 605's.

As noted , if space is a concern , you pay extra.

Of you prefer to build racks , and can still service the units the more common golf carts are less expensive.

Probably the best way to analize batts is by the pound , if space is no concern.

IF you can order the set with Flag terminals instead of round it helps.

If not, NAPS sells "military style" P & N terminals that allow good hookups to post style batts.

Fred, space is somewhat of a concern to me. I have no "bays" in my bus so my storage is pretty much what I build in. I have a perfect place for them - it's the former transit step ("accordian doors") on the left side, half-way between the wheels. Unfortunately, without major welding and re-do of frame rails etc., I'm limited to a length of about 46" so the slightly longer L-16's won't fit 4-end-to-end but the T-605's will.

I've built a battery box that extends up into the floor area but it only give me about 12 1/2" of height. This would be pretty easily modified but that would increase the intrusion into the living area. (I'm planning a "breakfast nook/booth" with a hatch to maintain the batteries that is easy to do over the 4" intrusion but would be much harder to do over a 10" intrusion.)

So, I can have 8 batteries (4 sets of 12V) if I go with the slightly smaller, much-less-expensive batteries with only a slight loss in capacity. And the smaller batteries fit my bus with no mods to the existing chassis structure.

There is a (possible) further advantage in that if I go with a 24V house system, the 8 smaller batteries will give me an even two 4-battery clusters for 24V. Can't do that with 6 bigger batteries.

Looks like the 605's is the way to go for me. (It doesn't give me "ultimate" battery capacity but it looks like a pretty good setup, considering all the variables.)

"ultimate" battery capacity

Is really nice but pri$y, as noted if you will be boondoocking much the SOC meter should be installed BEFORE the batts go in,

Sam's club and Sears will allow a return if you kill the new set , but other dealers may not.

Never discharging below about 50% will give you the best chance of 5-7 years from a new set.

SOC meter is right at the top of the shopping list!

We are forced by our masters to purchase insurance for illegals (Uninsured Motorist).

But purchasing knowledge insurance for tour battset will pay YOU , not some criminal over the years.

Like good wiring , and all the other bus conversion choices , it will help you sleep at night,

Until the low voltage alarm comes on at O' dark 30!
