The owners manual says 50 miles is the maximum towing limit, but I wonder if anyone has tested that theory and what the results were.

I don't understand why it would be a problem this manual trans is the same one thats used in the golf and jetta that have logged more toad miles than anything else.

Thanks Smoky, I didn't realize the transmissions were one in the same, and that it was ok to pull the Golf and Jetta. I have used 4wd toads for many years.

I owned a 98 beetle 5 speed,I phoned vw of canada they told me i could not tow 4 down.They said if it jumpes into gear it would blow engine and trans,i asked if it ever happened they said yes.I used a car dolly.I now tow a honda crv 4 down.Way better two minutes done.

Can't it be held in neutral center with a bracket. The lever has to go forward or back to go into gear.
