Alright busnuts. Have an '80 Eagle, 8V71. The harmonic balancer (morse coupling) or whatever it is on the end of the engine crankshaft went bad. I took it to our mechanic for replacement. He told me this morning that a bolt had broken off and caused it to fail. Anyway, when he took it loose from the mitre box (or gear box, whatever it is called) that drives the fan and alternator, he found that the coupling on the front of the mitre box where the harmonic balancer bolts to has a lot of play in it. He has not taken it apart to see if a bearing is bad, etc as he has never torn into one of them.

However, it has given absolutely no problem. I check the grease in it everytime I check the engine oil, and there is no problem with loosing grease. It was making no noise or anything to indicate that there was a problem. It was properly doing its job turning the fan and alternator.

It is almost like it is supposed to have that "play" in it. Is this correct, or is there a bearing that has gone bad and can be replaced. The mechanic states that he doesn't mind tearing in to it to see about the bearing if there is one), as it apparently only involves removal of the front plate. But he wanted to make sure there is a problem before he does tear into it. The box also has a harmonic balancer on the rear of it, and it is fine, with no play, etc.

Again, it was not loosing any oil or grease, and was making no sounds or noises. Any suggestions on what to tell him? Your help is appreciated.
