Question, How should the high idle work on a 1984 eagle 10 with a DD692 auto. When you switch on the high idle it revs up the engine. Now you can't do this in drive gear. Hypothetically if your tooling down the road and you press on the brake repeatedly should the high idle kick in if your air pressure drops to low, just what is the proper workings of the high idle. Thanks

High idle is usually interlocked so that that it will not engage when the bus is NOT in neutral, with the parking brake selected (at least that's the way it is on an MCI). It won't usually kick in until air pressure reaches about 70 psi either. I can't imagine that it would come on in the circumstances you describe above.

FWIW

Well, since it is on a manual switch, it obviously is not intended to just come on in some kind of automatic fashion. It can only be activated under the conditions Dave D points out. Usually used for faster pressure build up after starting or for A/C while sitting and waiting for all the old folks to be herded out of the casino. Suppose there are other conditions calling for its' use, but those 2 come to mind.

With an MCI, if the switch is in the ON position, as soon as one engages the parking brake, the idle automatically goes to HIGH. As previously stated, this is to aid running the a/c whilst in the terminals, also keeps the oil splashing around the motor, etc. I don't think it helps with start-up as I don't remember whether it works until the air pressure is up. It won't engage other than when the parking brake is set.
