I've seen alot of talk here (BNO) on auto transmissions, but I don't think I've have seen anything on the problem like I am having. I am changing from manual trans. to auto (Allison HT740) on a 05 eagle. My question! The auto trans. is 8 3/4 inch longer than the manual trans. and my local driveshaft shop says the driveshaft can not be shorten that much from the length that it is now. And I don't know that I can reposition the engine, because of the miter box. How have you guys that have done this gotten around this? PS The miter box has, what looks like a balancer on the front. Thanks in advance to all. ALBUS4106 |

FWIW, I'm converting from an 8V-92 to a 60 series and also using different auto, so the driveshaft length came up for me too. I'm converting an '81 Neoplan so I called the Colorado factory and talked to customer service (nice to have a bus that's still in production, in the U.S., with real engineers) and was told that they have gone as short as 14" [I don't know if that is joint to joint, or flange to flange, but I expect joint to joint). They also said to keep an offset of at least 3". From my days engineering sterndrives for MerCruiser, I recall we did the same to keep needle bearings moving so they would last a reasonable time. Since my shaft is 32" joint to joint, I've a lot to play with before I get too close. |
