I have just moved out of my coach.

I intend to tear down the garage and pour
a 45'X 24' pad with a mechanics pit.

I want to build a roof over the coach which will
be parked over the pit.

It seems that I could use I beams 8"or 10 inch,
bolt them directly to the cement pad and use these
as columns, rising 14', providing 2' of clearance.

I would need rafters from the top of each column
extending out over the coach. additional rafters
would extend the other direction & provide protection for the car since I won't have a
garage.

Across the rafters I can string 45' lenghts of
sheet metal.

I would probably have four to six columns to
support this.

I do not intend to attach walls or doors.

I suppose a "T" best describes each column.

Surely somebody has constructed such a building
as I'm sure that I've seen these in my travels.

Can anybody help me find such a structure?

I'd like to pour this summer.

I'm quite concerned about the 24' wide X 45' long
wing (roof). While winds are not a big issue, any
wind blowing this into the coach will be a big
issue.

Thanks.

I would get a hold of all the steel erectors and fabricators in your area. They tear down about as many buildings as they put up and they usually have a stockpile of used steel framing (I beams, gerts, channels, 90 degree angels) sort of like a junk yard for pre-enjoyed structural steel components. You can start to design around what you find available, and, you WILL save HUGE money. Example:

1) A 45 x 80 x 12 building manufactured from all new components will cost around $50,000 in materials.
2) A 45 x 80 12 building manufactured from all salvaged components will cost around $6,000 in materials.

Yes the salvage building will cost more labor to erect than the new building but not that much more…maybe $20%. In the end you get the building you need for at least 50% less than all new.

I’ve done this already for myself, twice, and for a few friends as well.

My 2 cents,
