... for sale on the E-place - 1963 series 60 with REAR engine 6v53, HD 70 auto (by the sounds of it), air suspension and 2 big luggage bay underbelly, located in Arizona.
The add was rather interesting & slightly revealing with a wee bit of history lesson.
Enjoy or tell a Ukrainian friend looking for something unusual for there christmas.

It sure would be nice to have somebody around that knew the history of our buses like he did. Great piece of reading.

>it's a manitobian/ukrainian expression, sorry for the confusion I should have elaborated further

...Now who is up to saving that fancy old crown bus, would be my main point here then , I think.

~Unfortunate that crown wasn't able to establish a big enough market to expand on more of these rear engine coach features into something the size & power of the super crown, but it seems GMC had already focus on that end of the market back then.

Sounds like this might be quite a find for the right person. There is some confusion over the engine. The text talks about a 6V-53 but the listing shows an Detroit 8.1 (actually, an 8.2 I think) Fuel Pincher. That is a four cycle engine with a less than stellar reputation

>True enough , real bus love doesn't employ exacting specification, not every busnut needs to drag a heavy toad or wants too. All depends on what function we conspire to use as justification for saving our buses (so the rest don't catch on to how nutty this "hobby" really is)

Hey Ian -

Don't you know that the particular body style of that Crown on eBay is affectionately known as a "Twinkie"?

So, therefore, the yellow is an appropriate color!

LOL!!

Hilarious! Thanks guys :-)

I drove a skoolie full time for a few years in the late 70's/early 80's and made a pretty good living (as a single guy) at it. Of course, as anyone who drives one will tell you, you practically have to live on the bus if you want to make any kind of money doing it.

Perhaps it's simply PTSD that made me post the above remark ;-)

Yes eye2 suffer the odd relapse of PTSD whenever I glance to long at that chrome yellow, bossnut, but I have trained myself to look underneath the paint & concentrate on the sensible engineering and consider that not every thing our society has created is total GARBAGE, then I feel a tinge of hope.

~ So if there is "hope" for me, in my very advanced stages of this wonderful disease then , there is certainly hope for us all.

-If not, well perhaps I can cut the bottom out of a pair of "sauce bottles" as my well meaning friend "old chucky" is always going on about, and fashion a pair of spectacles from them ?

Great respect for the yellow bus.

Learned a lot, threading that thing through the downtown, every second house getting a renovation, dump boxes, contractor mirrors sticking out, delivery trucks, narrow streets, etc.

I'm bullet proof to noises like I never would have been without that experience.

Love those folks who keep at it!
Thank you for getting the kids to school and back in one piece!

However, I'll stick to motorcoaches and reminisce fondly...

happy coaching!

6V-53 was not so stellar of an engine either. If you have someone that knows how to overhaul the 8.2 Fuel Pincher, it ran pretty well. But a 210hp and 420lb/ft torque (about the same as a 6V-53) will make for a pretty leisurely drive. Not quite like the guy I saw that put a NTC400 and HT740 in his (mid engine). Now that's a setup! Good Luck, TomC

Well Guys...I Bought The 1963 Crown.... I Am So Frigging Happy I Can Hardly Sleep...The Bus Is Also Unit Number 63. And The Thing That Got Me Is I Was Born In 1963... Cool.

And I Figured While I Was At It...I Went Ahead And Bought The 1976 Crown Tandem That Also Ended On Monday On The E.

So Now I Have 2 Crowns... Becarefull What You Ask For.But I Think I Did Good......

I Will Be Picking Up Both Before The Quartzite Rally. And Attending The Q In One Of Them Or Maybe Both? The 63 Is About 50 Miles Away From The Rally And The 76 Is Only 200 Miles....So Im Thinking All Should Go Well..

Wish Me Luck....I Will Post More Once I Know More 10-4--10-4

Well,No Need To Change My Avitar. I Still Have More EAGLES Than Crowns....

My Plans Are To Keep The 1963 60 Series Crown As Original As Possible. That Is A Very COOL Crown Being 1 Of Only 9 Built. The History Is Priceless In My Book. The 8.2 Detroit I Am Told Is Completly Rebuilt With Only A Couple Hundred On The Clock. Being Born In 1963 This Bus Will Be A Keeper For Me. I Have Always Loved The Style Of The Crown Bus. Now ( I Hope ) I Have A Really Sweet Little Bus.

As Far As The 76 Tandum Crown..??? WOW What A Monster !!!. The Bus Has 24,5 Wheels. What I Think I Want To Do With This Bus Is Use It For Storing Some Of My Vintage Auto Part Inventoty In. This Will Be Kinda Like A Storage Container On Wheels. It Beats Paying Storage Fees. Heck I Could Have Bought About 8 Of These Last Year At The Price Of The Storage Containers I Rent Monthly. So,Anyway....I Always Loved The Look Of The 40 Foot Tandum Axle Crown. LOOKS LIKE A MONSTER !! Im Very Excited About This Bus...I Cant Wait To Shift That Roadranger...WOW.!!!

Thats My Story And Im Sticking Too It.

Im Sure There Will Be Much More To Say Once I Pick Them Up Next Week......

My Wife Thinks I Need Medical Attention !!. She Was Talking About BRAIN REMOVAL !!! LOL

all buses make dandy potable sheds, in any condition... parking storage rent for a 40' bus is always going to be cheaper than rented warehouse self storage units, which are often on the same lot ???

~while being bus nuts is a condition it's not really a medical condition as medical treatments don't do much for the condition; only bus(es) can treat our condition, there is no "cure"...

LOL !!!!!..

Yes I Understand.

Thats Why My Wife Came Up With Brain Removal....

NO BRAIN......NO PAIN......!!!!!.

Funny Stuff... Well Thats Just The Thing. I Own 1 Acre Here In Denver. And 20 Acres In Kansas. So The Ground Space Isnt A Problem At This Time. Only The High Price Of Storage Containers. Once Added Up By The Year.. Its Just Wasted Money.

So....Bring On The Buses....

Back In My Early 20s I Traveled The Country In A Converted Skoolie. What A Blast That Was For 10 Years..... But Thats Another Topic And Post...

Is There Anyone Else Out There With A Crown Bus??
I Really Like There Style.( 1940s Look In A 1970-80s Coach )....AWESOME.

Hi Jerry are you running your Crown on WVO? I have read where it can screw up your engine. When you get on the road how available is WVO? Forty thousand is a lot of miles you must be good at shifting now? Is your Crown a five speed? Thanks Doug

Hey Doug,
Is that you, The Doug Hylton I haven't seen in at least 20 years.
Well, if you are then hug yourself for me.

Yes, for a couple of years.

Yes, IF it is not clean AND hot.

Yes I've always been good at shifting. It came natural.

So far, I leave home with a full tank of WVO and burn it where ever the price of fuel is the highest. When I get to where I'm going I fill her up for the trip home. I have not bothered to collect on the trip because the price of fuel has been under $3.00 a gal. When the price goes up I can see myself spending more time on the road collecting oil. I have paid very close attention to the state of WVO on my travels and It is my opinion that there is way more out there than the few of us who are doing this can use. There are some places where it's all spoken for already. and some places that no one even knows what you are talking about.

Yes it is a 5 speed

Do you have a bus?

Jerry I don’t have a bus but I am looking at a Crown just like yours. I think the crown is a cool looking bus with the all the curves. I like the looks of the old Flxible Buses and there are a few around here but they originally had a 4-71 engine and most have worn out and been replaced with a gas engine. A 36 foot long Crown might be too big did Crown make any shorter versions? Take a look at this bus its only 25 foot long. It’s a 1950 GMC with a gas engine. I like the curves on this bus but not the gas engine.

http://s977.photobucket.com/albums/ae255/wouldsman_photos/bus/?albumview=slideshow

I can see from the photos of your bus that you are very innovative. I noticed the large gate valve on your heating stove and I assume this is to control the air intake. Can you use the heating stove with the bus underway?
If it turns out that Mexico is too dangerous this year where will you go for the winter? There might be some out-of-the way places in Florida or some of the Gulf States that would be good to spend the winter.
Best Regards
Doug

"Can you use the heating stove with the bus underway?"
Yes but the is no need to because the bus heater will toast you out.
AND some one will call the fire dept because they see smoke coming out of a vent pipe.

I don't know about Mexico we'll have to wait and see. Fla is too rich for me and Miss. is too cold.

That GMC would be beautiful all fixed up. BUT way too much work.

Did you avoid my question or don't you remember me?

Jerry
Sure I remember you. You were living in a motor home the last time I was up there in Summit. I have been in the same house about thirty years now. It’s been that long since I lived at Blodgett.
Yes I agree the GMC is too much work even if the bus was free.

Best Regards
Doug

Doug,
As far as I know Crown didn't make a bus smaller than about 32 or so feet. Mine is 35'. They are solid and built heavy duty and the drive great. I'm a lot less tired after driving all day in the bus than I was with the last van we had.
I'm working trying to finish the cabinets now. I've been doing this for the last 8 years. I don't remember what I did before the bus came along.
