OK here goes I think I kknow just enough to be very dangerous. I left last Wed for Portland OR. 265 miles. Got almost to Pendleton taking my time going down cababe hill in second gear couldn't hear the Jake touched my brakes and felt a little soft. Had heard the jjake earlyier. I got down past escape area brakes getting hot very quickly. Made mind up to hit the back of a duck tail lowboy tlr squar. It had pulled into hot lane infront of me I was blinking lites all the time. At last moment he sped up keeping anyone else from gettiing in front of us, made it to the bottom excited to say the least. In the plus 25K miles we have had the coach the brakes have been adjusted 8 or 10 times Had brakes adjusted in Pendleton on for Port. about half way there I found every time I touched the brakes they would kind of drag and let go after a bit. Then the park brake started draging and releasinig very hard. Made it hard but with hot brakes draging we got home safely. The Jake is 12 V and I find I am blowing the 20 amp fuse every time it is switched on. I would like to know if anyone in this area could assist me. Cash flow bad and nine cat lives runing out. Sorry for long winded sobstory but didn't know how to explain. OH 75 4905, 8V71 no blower 3 speed automatic./ Thanks to all Larry |

Larry, If I were near you I would be happy to help, but being in San Diego it is just too far. Are you in a camping area or on the side of the road? I am sure someone close to you will help. Good luck and keep us up to date on your situation. |

The Jake problem may just be a short in the wiring, should be pretty easy to find. It sounds like you may have some serious brake problems that will be beyond the ability of anyone to remote trouble shoot. If you have had to adjust them every two or three thousand miles, it sounds like they are not releasing properly and may very well be used up. It could be a valve, broken springs, lubrication, or a host of other things. Believe me, I understand about the cash flow, but you need someone knowledgeable to have eyeballs on your brake situation and not depend on internet troubleshooting |

Forgot with all else,, All that adjust say the pads are very good. Also that when I pushed on the pedal there was a poping in the front some times. Do feel the front are the ones sticking as when we got home yesterday I could smell the brakes. The good thing I did come home and am parked at home. Just get the idea that nobody who worked on the brakes is going to rite issue. Altho I know not much. Am not blaming anyone but myself. With Jake must have to start at engine and donot know location. Thanks Larry |

Jack up axle on one side at the time. Apply brakes; release and check if wheel can then be turned. Could be broken return spring in brake chamber. I thought you needed 24 volt Jakes for your coach. If you smell brakes, put your hand close (don't touch) to the drum through handhole in wheel. The dragging drum will be hot or much hotter than the others. Those infrared temp guns are very useful for this kind of situation. I would think that it would have to be one of the rear brakes not working as they do most of the work. Also, make sure you don't have oil or grease on any of the linings, although the shop would have told you about this. Disconnect Jake wiring where it goes into cylinder head. Does the fuse still blow? If it doesn't, check wiring under valve cover.Sounds like the return spring in a DD3 is broken. Do you hear air leaking when you apply brakes/ |

John can hear no air leaking, but see the guage go down a little with multipal push on peddle. Forgot to say have air throtle. I've had a good reminder also called read Da Book. So have to see where jake line goes in. Am really feeling lazy today, the extended trip with coach and all took a lot out of me. Not to say I am open to all thots. I do have a temp gun BUTTTTTT didn't think of it. I did feel heat coming from front when we got home and did not smell anything neaar rear. Thanks all for help we are not done yet Larry |

First off, DO NOT GO UNDER AN AIRED UP AIR RIDE BUS, OR BETWEEN THE TIRES AND THE WHEEL WELLS, WITHOUT BLOCKING IT SECURELY AT THE JACKING POINTS! A quick thought on an easy way to find the Jake problem: Start the engine, and while idling, turn on the Jakes, (with a new fuse) if it blows, the problem is in the bus wiring. If the fuse holds, leave the switch on, rev the engine and let quickly off the throttle. A blown fuse now says the problem is between the buffer switch and the Jake solenoids under the valve covers, or a shorted solenoid. Another guess, from paying attention to what you have said, is a relay valve failure in the rear. (Hot front brakes, and poor braking performance, remembering your rears do 2/3 of the work?) Its not a broken return spring... G |

Larry....FWIW....just from reading your posts, I'd say you are way "maxed out"..... Suggestion....relax a bit, since you are at home base...take a couple of naps, a few deep breaths and re-read the posts from those who have answered. You just might get a "new" perspective...BTDT!!! These folks have some sound advice...Yes I have Jakes. Best wishes. RCB |

In addition to all the other good ideas it may be because of so many brake adjustments your brake cam may be worn so much it is going over center and not returning properly. |

From the sounds of it, your wheel ends have not been disassembled in a long time. That is BAD. You know nothing about the condition of the linings from what you can see with the drum on. Thickness is meaningless if the linings are a crumbling mess from overheating, they may be contaminated with lube, either now, or from a previous leaking seal. The moving parts, the springs, cam and cam bushings, the drum, all should be inspected, cleaned, and replaced as necessary. Just because you pay someone to "adjust" your brakes, doesn't mean that you have been well taken care of. And then there are the air valves. Someone mentioned DD3, and you said the parking brake was doing something strange? The inversion valve is a consumable that needs changing if you don't know its age. It is the one mounted on the differential with the forest of airlines attached to it. Probably need fresh airlines as part of the job. Never mind your jakes, your brakes need the number one priority attention right now. You can do all the dis-assembly and re-assembly by yourself, you need a reputable professional to hang around and offer tips and the keen eye on the condition of the parts. Perhaps the foreman or a technician from the local coach company might be willing to supervise your work in exchange for beverage funds one Saturday? Your coach will be a blast from the past, the oldest guys will have done their apprenticeships on them, might bring a tear of remembrance of simpler times... Well, you can hope for a sympathetic ear? happy coaching! buswarrior |

Larry I had to replace a one jake on my 4905. When I did I pinched a wire in the valve cover route. It shorted until I found the pinched wire. If you have a bad jake, you need a 24 volt jake , not a 12 volt ,unless you ahve changed the complete bus to 12 volt. That means starter, charging system, Etc. |

Mike, Jakes take so little current, and are on so little of the time that they will not cause battery de-watering by wiring 12V Jakes off of the grounded battery in a 24V system. G |

Hi again all...in regards to the jake I do believe it is wired to the house twelve volt as it uses a twenty amp two prong car fuse. It is wired with the fan on the windshield is the only way I first knew it was blown. The fuse holder is over the fridge in panel with other fuses and house tank lites. thanks much all don't even seem to want to clean up the coach, have to do it tomoro. Larry |

Larry Good luck on your hip replacement. I had both knees done 5 years ago and never looked back. Wished I had done it sooned rather then suffer with pain. Hips and knees are two of the most successful operations done today. You will be back in the bus sooner then you think. Bill |

I know two people with double hip replacement. Same comment from them as Bill G. One of them really surprised me when I saw him when he walked into our shop without his crutches a couple of weeks after the second surgery. I immediately noticed that his face didn't show the pain any more. We had seen him for years & now it "looked like he was at peace". It's hard to describe but if you saw it you'd understand. |

Thanks Bill Jim thanks and with my email I can receive but not send. If this hip works as well as the five vertebra as fusion in the mid 70's I would be flying high. It has taken me a quite a while but I have decided it has to be done and as quick as possible. Thanks again all... Larry |

Larry If I was not so far south in Florida I would very much like to help you out here, I am not a bus expert but I do understand mechanical things. with the expert advise here I am sure that we could take care of it. I would get the hands on with expert guidance, you would get the brakes done right for the cost of food. and one beverage. |
