Hello and am I glad to find you here !!!!
I've spent the last two days pouring over archives and other threads usefull to us in our conversion , wow ....
An answer I could not find or rather a question not asked is this ..
Lets say I wanted to change little or nothing in term of oem on a 24 volt MCI MC-8 , and to have an additional batery(s) for house lights , appliences etc .
The question is this - Can I charge my 12 volt batteries from the 24 volt batteries ?
and could I plug a charger into the 24 v system that would maintain and charge on both for extended periods ???
I hope to wire the cabin with 12 v for all the common stuff ...etc ,

Rob, that's what Vanner equalizers are made to do. Most common is the 60 amp variety. It just keeps the 12 volt bank at 1/2 of the voltage of the 24 volt bank.

It does this by taking some power from the 24 volt bank. If you have a way to keep the 24 volt bank up, then the 12 volt bank will stay up, too.

Even when you take more power from the 12 volt bank than the Vanner can put out, it will try to catch up the 12 volt bank by putting out power up to it's ratings when your load is less than the ratings.

That's my understanding of how it works.

Google 12v to 24v chargers , these are common on many small fish boats.

The engine is 12V but the trolling motor is 24V , so there are now dozens of choices.

IF you need to OPERATE , not just charge , the much bigger Vanner is a way to go.

For long term non running I have several 12V chargers, that will trickle charge. But I have both 24V. & 12V 10SI( same as GM one wire altnerators). They are driven off the old AC groves on the crank. Cannot use old 24V. alt. cause my engine is from a truck. Two 12V. chargers can be used to charge the 24v., or a small 24V. solar setup works if parked to far from a power pole/extention cord.

I like the extra alternator Idea , but I have yet to checkout the factory a/c to determine weather it is staying or going . I would rather have a two way or threeway a/c in the storage compartment and run a diesel generator on the back porch for boondocking , as well as the extra alternator for housepower while rolling down the road .

...and I intend to supplement with solar when able , not a part of the system to expend to much cash , as most of the time we will be running or plugged in . My goal is to minimize the power needs first , and then power them all , so we won't really miss anything we have operating in any given situation .

uggghhh ...the Vanners site just confuses me ...I understand the concept , but need to have a more detailed understanding of exactly what we need to suit our purpose ..
24 volt batteries in a charged state at all times while ac is available , able to run all oem lights in cabin .
12 volt batteries charging , and running most of the house lights as well as several small appliences ie. waterpump , lights , stereo , tv/vcr , exhaust fans atc.
