Just thought I would make a thread to say hi to everyone and intorduce myself. I have been a bus enthusiantist since 1976 and aquired my first bus in 1979 for a mobile hunting lodge and havent looked back. I have sinse retired and pretty much go fulltime on a partime basis.

My current project is insured and rolling but I guess I could use some help along the way for a couple of task. Seems my eagerness to rip things apart has dwindleed over the years and this will be my next to last project bus.

I hope to get a caravan together in the next year or so to travel through Alaska for a couple of months. I have been part of the outdoors my entire life putting to good use the lessons learned earning many skill awards and merit badges while in the Boy Scouts.

I live between two locations and most of the time in Va so if anyone is coming through the DC/Baltimore/Richmond area be sure to drop me a line.

Hey Teresa! Thanks for signing up for the carvan. Are you looking to throw your beast in or looking for an empty luggae bay to stow away in. Its always great to have a little brat along to keep the pots stirred up..Now just need a Wagon master and a tail gunner...lol

Ha! I just talked to my mom about it and she wants to go too. Of course so do my kids and dogs lol. It would be a great trip for my 40' Little GTO!! There are some people at the other forum who would probably want to go as well, you should post over there too with a heading about Caravaning to Alaska. When would you want to go? Im in California, where are you? Maybe you could plan the trip and the highways and post along the way as well so that other bus nuts could join the caravan at least for part of the trip or all of it..... sounds FUN!!!

Did you have to talk to your mom for permission to take your 40'little GTO or talk to her about watching the kids and dog? LOL

As far as the other forum theres to much drama going on and I might post something Mike wants to print for all to see..My Pop is coming along as I am his care taker as well as the dogs but the kids gotta stay..lol

I am planing on 2012. If I can get things togeather finanially 2011 but I dont see it as it will take $2500 in fuel alone. I need new rubber so thats going to take a hit out of the ole bank account and currently doing some rolling updates which wont help the matter.

Im out on the east coast in the Mid Atlantic region and go between Va, Tn, Ga, and Fla.

Planing the trip isnt a problem and as I have planed many over the years another one is just routine. If you depart Seatle and roll the Alaska Hwy North through BC that initself takes about 8 to 10 days. Denalai is a wonderful area so head east and tie in Anchroage and Fairbanks. Easy 15 days with sites on the way. Then can plan a ferry out for another adventure.

Late May- Early June is the earlist I would recomend heading out. July and August are great months and Back in the lower 48 by Mid September is best.

As far as othe busnuts, establish rally points in Knoxville, Chicago, St Louis, KC, Bute, ect ect to meet at a final departure point...And yes it would be a blast. I have caravaned with 4X4, motorcyles, boats,,,,now time for a bus...

haha!! My mom is my copilot :-)

I respect your wishes not to post in the other forum...... but I already did and got some interest http://www.busconversions.com/bbs/index.php?topic=17043.0

I just bought all new tires, so I greatly sympathise about the cost of them.... argh!! And some of my "back burner" projects need to be done as well. But a trip like this would require time in planning and coordination, especially with all the bus nuts. The more time we have for planning and coordinating the better the trip would be for everyone.

Im VERY excited about this!!!

Unfortunately my Dad dosent drive anymore so that leaves the copiloting to my German Shep service dog. Ever since he got a leather flying cap and goggles he has been itching like a flea infested hound to hit the road. He alrady keeps the seat warm.

What tires did you get. Im looking at Mich's that are on promo for $390. As far as projects go, I need to fix some systems from where my coach was boondocked and folks started tring to help them selves to things.

You are apsolutely right in the planing and cordination which I dont mind doing. For the eastern busnuts a return or depature route through Canda might be intresting also.

As far as backburner projects go I have camped out of my project coach over the years using truckstops and campgrounds to shower. Matter of fact my current coach's shower has been turned into a closet.

I think the best time to shoot for would be 2012 to allow folks to schedule the time off as you really need 30-45 days for the trip and another 3-5 for those coming from the east. I can work up an Itenirary and post it for suggestions or changes.

All your suggestions, including 2012, sound great with me!

As for the tires I got...... some people have issues with it, but it suits me fine (at least right now). I went down a size, to 11r22.5 they are Firestone 560 load H. The reason I got them is because my coach is still being stripped and all the stuff I have for it came out of my prior 27 ft motorhome which had a gross weight of 11,000 pds. Im going to have to watch the weight as I begin building walls and stuff. The plus side to the tires was that if I am in the boonies most anywhere (including the town i live in) and need a tire I CAN GET IT lol. I wont be waiting a week or so to get a 12r22.5 and the price for brand new (6 of them) installed, fronts balanced, old tires recycling fee was about $2200.00 For the 12r22.5 I had been quoted almost $500 per tire so....... way better for me. I "may" go with getting a larger wheel and move up to 11r24.5 if weight begins to be an issue.

Camping is camping lol and when you do it in a steel tent you are waaaayyyy ahead of the game!! I just spent 3 weeks, going across 6 states with 7 people and 2 dogs in my steel tent! We stopped every couple days at campgrounds to shower and charge our phones and then were off again!!! It was soooooo much fun!!! We had a coleman camping stove, a couple ice chests and mats on the floor!!

Yaeh, I understand about your dad. Actually mom doesnt drive either, she just tells me where to go lol.
