I need four single bunk bed mattresses and would like to benefit from anyone's experience! Foam seems a good idea because you can get it custom sized. High density foam? Tempurpedic foam? Latex foam? Is four inches thick good enough? Any thoughts? I searched the whole board and found nothing relevant! |

High density foam? Yes Latex foam? No, some folks are allergic to Latex Is four inches thick good enough? Yes, just right, don't go thinner. The test is to throw the pad on the hard floor and get down on it... now try bouncing up and down with all your weight on one elbow. now one knee. if you bottomed out at all, it will not do. Peter |

I use the self- inflating mattresses made for campers and hikers, called "thermorest". They are only an inch thick when they are inflated (you basically open their valve and they inflate themselves... the work comes when you have to deflate it to put it away...), and they roll up to a very tight bundle when not using them. They are so good that I can sleep right on rocks or bare dirt and still feel very comfortable!!! Check one out at a camping store before you buy foam.... Cheers Gary |

I use a Thermorest on some occassions and like them quite a bit. However, one must remember that air expands/contracts in changing temp and altitudes. You may want to leave the valve open during some traveling situations. |

Latex is the best, most comfortable matress foam. Yes, some people are alleric, but you are not exposed to the latex in your matress. Urethane is not nearly as comfortable. We have been sleeping on the same latex matress for 28 years and all it needs is recovering. Urethane foam would have been dead by now. One cash saving trick I used in the past is to buy a used matress of Latex foam and cut it to the size you need and have it covered. You can tell the latex by the weight and the label. Used urethane foam is already worn out. |
