Doug, You didn't list a model number, but I am going to assume you are talking about a "temporary power/ construction" type generator? If so, this fills the archives with explanations, but here goes again. A low cost, high rpm, (3600) air cooled generator is objectionably noisy, may not have low oil protection, no remote start stop, and no fuel pump to draw fuel from a remote tank. All of these type units draw cooling air from around the rope pulley, and blow it over the fins on the engine, where the hot air just goes away. The exhaust is given off thru a small muffler on the side of the engine, along with the hot air. This type of generator will overheat a compartment IN LESS THAN ONE MINUTE! An RV type generator (1800 rpm) pulls its cooling air across the engine, thru much better shrouds, and exhausts the hot air down thru a specially designed and sealed outlet under the compartment. The engine cooling air, and the carburetor air are taken in thru louvers in the compartment, which ventilates it. Remote start, battery charging, low oil and hot engine protection are pretty standard. The exhaust is made to be piped outside of the compartment. Your neighbors in a campground will throw rocks at you if you pull up and get one of the cheapos out and set it on the ground beside your bus! Thats why we all don't buy them. G |

Good job George! I couldn't have said it better myself. I have one of those temporary power gensets in my garage gathering dust for all the reasons you so eloquently penned ...er typed John |

When camping it could simply be installed on a slide out , automatic if desired. Really depends if 100 hours a year of noisemaker , or 2000 is required for Your WAY . I have seen the air cooled Honda construction run happily , with almost zero service , for a number of house builds in a row. FF |
