our old neighbor moved out last month, i know they disliked my coach outside their window ,but they never came out and said anything. they also took 4 months to tell me my dog was dumping on their lawn.
well the new lady stopped me on the street the other day and asked me when i was moving the coach as she dose not like to look out the window while eating her breakfast. she suggested i put it in storage. i said i cant afford to do that as it would be rather expensive. she then asked how can i afford to go on vacations? i replied that we only travel less than 50 miles each way and can stay anywhere for free or go to a campground for $35. she suggested i go get a job. i was very nice to her but i went home and told the Mrs what happened. my dear wife blew a gasket! i thought she was going right over and read her the riot act, so i told her she wasn't home. how should we handle this situation? any good ideas?there is only one place on my property to park the coach as i have a whopping 2/10ths of an acre.

Depends a lot on how nice the coach looks on the outside. Be careful about turning this into a war with a new neighbor. They can make your life miserable if they start complaining to local authorities in some areas.

unfortunately this is a problem for many. Your lot seems too small to do much and you may have a legal problem soon if this is persued by neighbors. It will all be anonomous I am sure.

What I have done on my one acre lot that I love having and it is located on the corner of two streets visible all around. 22 years ago I built a 8' high fence, the normal is about 6 ft. Well, when I did do that I did not have objectionable neighbors on two sides and put that sucker up fast. Not knowing I would one day years later have a huge 40 ft. bus.

Neighbors now are appreciative of what I have done as it does not interfere with their values of their property, they do not see what I am up to which I just love. I can work day or night on my bus and the noise does not travel past the fence because of the height very easily. My neighbors on the fence side were not there when I built it but there are now. They do not know what I am doing and I don't care what they are doing. We all get along, it helps to be a neighbor hood fixit man though. Oh, my neighbors call it (Fort LaBombard) because of the shape of it when I used to have many, many flower beds around the place. I have new interest now, I try to use roundup on all the grass I can!!

My suggestion is to talk to your neighbors, one on one, let them know you do not want to infringe on them in any way and is there any way you can work out their problem with you having your bus there to work on so you can travel in the future. Keep calm, keep cool and listen, listen to them closely for tips what you can do. If there is a law against it or ordinance, you are dead meat!! you will never win and the odds of you having your dream vehicle at home go down the crapper.

Put yourself in their shoes and you do not have a love for buses, or hot rods, or tractor trailors of neighbors parked in your neighborhood?? What would you do and how would you feel. What if the Independent Tractor Trailor driver had no place to park his rig and this is the way he has to make a living and is only home maybe a few days a month? This is a lot to ask of your neighbors for a passion that not everyone will appreciate.

Here is a photo of what I did and it works. But, I also have enough property to do this stuff, a small lot will not cut it right next door to a neighbor.

Good Luck, I am not trying to discourage you here but make others aware wanting to do this that a lot is involved not just by you.

Gary

I am with Gary and John above. We also have a corner lot and we do alot of nieghborly snowplowing and fixing. we have a 6'fence rule and i have that, its just put on top of a 2x6 leveling board on the bottom. If you have a neighbor who is not happy you have to try hard. I do like Teresa's idea in therory, but you dont want a war you wont win. What does the exterior look like on the bus? Maybe a quick stockade fence or row of cedars or similar.Good Luck

I get ticked at people who dont mind their own business..... sigh, I do know both sides of it though. The house I am living in now used to be my grandmother's. When the people moved in next door (they have a true junker's paradise in thier backyard which my kitchen and dining room windows had a perfect view of) she didnt like the new view. So she planted a bunch of fast growing bushes, but the neighbor was kind enough to put up a tall fence.

I know of at least one bus nut who acquired a bus and quickly had to resell it because of neighbors complaining and calling the police. Apparently there was some sort of an ordinance against it.

my feeling is this "ol"bitty knew there was a bus there and never said anything nor did she ask if it was leaving. these people collect houses(5)and my aim is to sell them mine as we want to move anyway.what will most likely get them to buy it is when i tell them i am going to advertise in *y*es on bikes magazine... you don't like my bus lady how are you going to like a bunch of masculine women on Harley's parked in front of your window? yes i am slightly mentaly ill.

If you have street parking in front of her house, you could move it out to the street and put in in front of her house. She would like it better then by her kitchen.

Take it from one who has been there, you will never win that battle by fighting the neighbors. Only by befriending them and getting them involved is there a chance.

Tom,

Before I did anything at all, I would look up the applicable codes and ordinances for your municipality, county, and state.

In many municipalities, having any sort of vehicle other than a passenger automobile or light truck on a residential lot is either prohibited outright or requires a permit or variance. Many counties, especially in suburban areas, also have such laws on the books.

Before you say anything at all to them it behooves you to know just what kind of trouble they can create. It is quite possible that they can force you to remove the bus from your property completely with a simple phone call or perhaps a written letter to the city or county code enforcement department. If that's the case, you'd best work out some kind of deal with them before it escalates; I can assure you that you will not win against code enforcement.

The development where we have property that constitutes our legal residence is in a rural county. Just before we bought it, there were perhaps four or five dozen lots with RVs on them where people spent the summer. Some lived year-round. Most of the "RV lots" were well developed, with concrete pads, hookups, sheds, landscaping, etc., and most owners had paid thousands for the lots, and thousands more for improvements; I would guess some lots might have had as much as $30-$50k invested.

A lone irate homeowner singlehandedly forced the county to evict every single one of them and property values in the development crashed. FWIW.

does the thought come back to us that ONE WOMAN was able to take prayer out of our schools? I have just been visited by our local code enforcement board and they informed me that if the vehicles that I have aren't running, they would have to be moved. That was all that was said, So I fired up the coaches and she was happy and said I need to get rid of some junk!! I explained that they were works in progress for my shoe boxes FORDS and she said just make it look more presentable. LOL I told her come back in two weeks and we will have it done. Moral of the story, Always be nice and include neighbors, Invite her to go with you on a trip. Pay for her expenses too and she will be grateful, trust me on this one.

Just make sure you have insurance and tags for it and claim as a commuter van for work!

Now lets welcome Tom's neighbor to the area and give her a house warm bus nuts rally on Labor Day.

Then everyones suggestion to build a fence is a great idea, just be sure the back of it is baked on mud and when she looks out at your bus she will think shes looking in the mirror.

Your bus was probably there when she first looked at the house-right? Then it isn't any surprise to her. She should have first thought of that before she moved in.
I once looked at a house in Lancaster, Ca that the lot was 68ft wide x 302ft deep with a driveway going to the back (how perfect was that?). But-I didn't buy it because the next door neighbors had very loud parrots in outside cages. Good Luck, TomC

Jack Campbell, your post reminded me of the lady that told the preacher in church in front of EVERYONE that a certain deacon's pick up truck was parked in front of the bar one night all night long and that they should vote to remove him from the deacon board. Preacher said they would vote on it the next week. The deacon thought to himself, "If they would have asked...I would have told them the truck broke down in front of the bar...I got it fixed the next day!"
He parked his truck in front of her house all week long!

Thomas, read the codes really really really well. If there is a code against the bus being there you will not win this.

David Evans,
Thanks for this photo, it is a hoot and really made me laugh which I needed. This is not the answer of coarse but what a great thought to do.

Make friends is all I can recommend, try not to make any enemies as once the war starts, it will never ever end and not worth it. Perhaps a car port for your bus with a blocking door in front would suffice, your lot is just too small to do what I believe you want but good luck. Sugar goes a long way to get someone to calm down.

Hey Thomas

Just have David cut the hedge down and put it on your Bus for a hood ornamet.

You might call around to some campgrounds in the area. I leave my couch for a month or two
in Tn and the owner has a secured lot and I dont have to worry about break ins leaving it own my own property. Most Campgrounds charge you 30 to 50 dollars a month for long term storage.

honestly, try putting in some T posts and string shade cloth or burlap to make a cheap temporary fence and see if that pleases her. To have a car like that she must have some kind of a sense of humor. Try to win her over, but absolutely check out the codes and ordinances where you live. If the law is in your favor then all that will be required is trying to live peacefully with her or dont give a $%#@ and rub it in her face.

Paint a portrait of your bus on the side of the house, then go for a trip, she will be so use to you being gone she'll never know if you are home. And if she rats on you, just move the bus, they'll think she is nuts cause it is only a mural LOL! Peek-a-Boo!

While a pissing contest might be fun to contemplate, I can assure you that it is no fun at all once you are wet!
First, verify the local, county, & state codes allow this vehicle to be parked in your driveway. If it isn't allowed, you have already lost the battle, so you'd better get busy looking for alternate parking.
If it is allowed, make nice with yor neighbor - it will make your life so much easier.

Someone complained to the county about the 4 buses I have parked on 18 acres & you can't see them from the street. The county was in the middle of explaining to me that if I didn't have them moved in 10 days, they would move them & send me the bill. I took the humble road & begged them to listen to why I wanted them & how they were not junk but were icons of the transportation industry & one of them was Hoyt Axton's favorite tour bus. One of the county guys was a Hoyt Axton fan. After a few more minutes, they agreed with me & allowed me an exemption so I can keep them there - provided I don't antagonize the neighbor.
As it turned out, I wasn't kissing up, I was negotiating. :-)

Thomas, there was never any question about your mental instability. After all, look what hobby you have gotten yourself into. Any sane person runs screaming away when confronted with an old bus. Your neighbor doesn't even want one next door, probably because she believes the insanity might be contagious.
